OpenAI Tests ChatGPT's 'Study Together' Feature: How It Works
Some ChatGPT users have noticed a new feature called 'Study Together,' which takes a more interactive approach to learning. Instead of just providing answers, it prompts users with questions, aiming to make the learning process more engaging and participatory.
A new feature called ‘Study Together’ has started appearing for some ChatGPT users, though OpenAI hasn’t made an official announcement yet. The tool seems designed to support more interactive learning by asking users questions instead of simply providing answers—similar to Google’s LearnLM approach.

TechCrunch reports that some users are wondering if the feature might eventually include a group mode, allowing multiple people to join a shared chat. This could turn ChatGPT into a collaborative study space, ideal for classmates or friends preparing for exams together. Figure 1 shows OpenAI Trials 'Study Together' in ChatGPT.
If rolled out broadly, the ‘Study Together’ feature could help steer ChatGPT toward a more ethical and constructive role in education. While many educators have welcomed the tool for creating lesson plans, some remain concerned that students might become overly dependent on it for completing their assignments.
The ‘Study Together’ feature appears to be an effort to highlight the positive role of AI in education by encouraging critical thinking and discussion instead of simply providing answers [1]. It has the potential to make studying more interactive and appealing, particularly for students who need an extra boost of motivation.
By turning the chatbot into a learning companion or study buddy, OpenAI may be aiming to redefine how younger users engage with AI. For now, it remains to be seen whether the feature will be officially launched or discontinued after testing.
