Google Photos Introduces AI Tools To Remix Photos and Transform Them into Videos
Google Photos is getting a creative AI boost. The company announced new features that let users transform photos into videos and remix them into various styles such as anime, comics, sketches, or 3D animations. These tools will be available under a newly introduced “Create” tab in the app, which will centralize both AI-powered and traditional editing tools like collage makers and highlight video creators.

This update brings advanced AI capabilities to one of Google’s most widely used consumer platforms — Google Photos, which serves over 1.5 billion users. By integrating AI into such a popular app, Google is making the technology accessible to a broader audience, including those unfamiliar with AI tools. It also allows the company to gather valuable insights as users explore the new features. Since these tools are still experimental, Google will prompt users to give thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on the AI-generated content to help refine and enhance the experience. Google is introducing a new photo-to-video feature that lets users create short video clips from their own photos using the Veo 2 AI model — similar to capabilities already found in Gemini and, now, YouTube. This brings once-novel tools, like animating old family photos, into the mainstream. Users can choose between two prompts — “Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky” — to generate a six-second animated video.
Another addition, the Remix feature powered by Google’s Imagen AI model, allows users to instantly transform any photo in their gallery into various styles — such as sketches, anime, or 3D — with a single tap. Remix will be available to U.S. users on Android and iOS in the coming weeks.
Both the new photo-to-video and Remix features will include an invisible SynthID digital watermark to indicate that the content is AI-generated. This aligns with Google Photos' existing practices, such as watermarking images edited with its Reimagine tool. In addition, AI-generated videos will feature a visible watermark, similar to those created by Gemini.
The new “Create” tab — where these tools will live — is set to launch in the U.S. in August. Google plans to regularly update this section with new creative tools, experiments, and improvements.
These Google Photos updates were announced alongside similar enhancements for YouTube Shorts, which now offers its own photo-to-video functionality and new AI-powered effects using the Veo 2 model. YouTube Shorts is expected to upgrade to Veo 3 later this summer.
AI Creativity Comes to Google Photos
Google Photos, used by over 1.5 billion people, is getting a major AI-powered upgrade. Google has launched new tools that let users turn static photos into videos and creatively “remix” images into styles like anime, comics, sketches, or 3D animations. These features aim to make photo memories more dynamic and fun — even for users who haven’t explored AI before. A new “Create” tab in the app will centralize these tools, making it easy to access both AI and traditional editing options like collages and highlight videos.
Photo-to-Video and Remix – How They Work
Two main features are being rolled out:
- Photo to Video: Using Google’s Veo 2 model, users can animate their own photos into six-second video clips with prompts like “Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky.” This feature is available now in the U.S. for Android and iOS.
- Remix: Powered by Google’s Imagen model, Remix lets users instantly transform any photo into different creative styles. This will roll out in the U.S. in the coming weeks.
Watermarks, Feedback, and What’s Next
To ensure transparency, all AI-generated content will include a SynthID digital watermark, and videos will also show a visible watermark, marking them as AI-created. Google is collecting feedback with thumbs-up/down options to improve the tools over time. The “Create” tab will launch in August in the U.S. and will continue to evolve with more experiments and tools. These features were announced alongside similar updates for YouTube Shorts, which is also embracing AI creativity, soon upgrading from Veo 2 to Veo 3.
