WhatsApp has launched a new feature called Message Summaries, powered by Meta AI and using Private Processing technology. It’s designed to help users quickly catch up on dozens of unread messages—perfect for those times when you return to WhatsApp after a busy day or long trip and don’t have time to scroll through everything [1]. This feature makes reviewing messages faster and more convenient.

The new feature provides a quick summary of your unread messages in a chat, allowing you to grasp the conversation's main points without having to read every message individually.

How the Feature Functions

The Message Summaries feature uses a technology called Private Processing, enabling Meta AI to generate summaries directly on your device. This ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read your messages or access the summary. Additionally, others in your chats won’t be able to tell that you’ve used the summary feature. Your privacy remains fully protected—no messages are stored or sent to Meta’s servers, and you stay in complete control of the features you choose to use [2]. WhatsApp emphasizes that tools like Message Summaries are entirely optional, disabled by default, and only activated if you choose to enable them.

This feature is particularly helpful for users managing multiple chats throughout the day, offering a quicker way to stay updated. Currently, Message Summaries are being rolled out in English for users in the United States, with plans to expand to additional countries and languages later this year.
