Since Monday morning, users of Claude Code have encountered unexpectedly strict usage restrictions, sparking frustration among the platform’s most active users—particularly those subscribed to the $200-per-month Max plan.

Rather than receiving any prior notice or detailed explanation, users are simply shown a message stating “Claude usage limit reached,” along with a reset time, typically just a few hours away. The lack of transparency has led many to believe their subscriptions have been downgraded or that their usage data is being misreported. Complaints have been mounting on Claude Code’s GitHub page. Many Claude Code users are voicing frustration over newly imposed and unexplained usage restrictions that appeared Monday morning—particularly among those on the $200/month Max plan. One user noted, “There is no way in 30 minutes of a few requests I hit the 900 messages,” accusing Anthropic of inaccurate usage tracking.

Despite mounting complaints, Anthropic has remained vague. A company spokesperson acknowledged slower response times but offered no explanation for the changes, only saying, “We’re working to resolve these issues.”

The sudden shift, implemented without warning or clarification, has left users scrambling. “It just stopped the ability to make progress,” said one developer, who has struggled to find an alternative as capable as Claude Code.

These issues coincided with broader system instability, including API overload errors and six incidents on Anthropic’s status page—though the company continues to report 100% uptime for the week.

At the core of the confusion is Anthropic’s opaque pricing and limit structure. While the Max plan is advertised as offering 20× the usage of Pro (and Pro 5× that of the free tier), none of the plans guarantee fixed limits. With usage caps fluctuating based on demand and no clear guidance, even paying users are left in the dark, unable to plan around or predict service interruptions.

The $200-per-month Max plan has been a favorite among Claude Code’s heavy users—so much so that some have questioned its long-term sustainability for Anthropic. One user told TechCrunch that, under the current structure, he often racks up over $1,000 worth of usage in a single day based on API pricing. While he wasn’t shocked by the tightening of usage limits, he expressed frustration with the lack of transparency.

Sudden Limits Leave Users in the Dark

Since early Monday, Claude Code users—especially those on the premium $200/month Max plan—have encountered unexpected and restrictive usage limits. With no formal announcement from Anthropic, users were left puzzled, only receiving vague messages like “Claude usage limit reached,” along with reset times. The absence of clear communication has caused confusion and concern, particularly among developers relying on uninterrupted access.

Frustration Mounts Among Power Users

Heavy users voiced their complaints on GitHub and social media, claiming usage is being miscalculated. One user said, “There’s no way I hit 900 messages in 30 minutes.” For many, the restrictions have halted ongoing projects, with some unable to find a suitable alternative to Claude Code. The lack of guidance from Anthropic has only fueled user frustration.

Anthropic Responds — But Says Little

In response to inquiries, an Anthropic spokesperson acknowledged performance issues, stating, “We’re aware that some Claude Code users are experiencing slower response times,” but offered no specifics about the new usage limits. Users criticized the vague response and lack of transparency, demanding clearer communication and advance notice about such critical changes.

Pricing Tiers Add to the Confusion

Anthropic’s tiered pricing structure—Free, Pro, and Max—offers different usage levels but avoids defining fixed limits. The Max plan is supposed to allow 20× more usage than Pro, which itself offers 5× more than the free plan. However, usage caps “vary by demand,” making it impossible for users to predict or plan around restrictions, even at the highest tier.

Is the Max Plan Too Generous to Last?

Some users admit the Max plan may be too generous to be sustainable. One developer noted he regularly consumes over $1,000 in API-equivalent usage per day under the $200 plan. While he wasn’t surprised by the clampdown, he emphasized that Anthropic’s real failing is its silence. “Just be transparent,” he said. “The lack of communication just causes people to lose confidence.”
