Google announced many exciting features during its I/O event and is gradually rolling them out. By summer 2025, it's expected that Google will unveil the Gemini Live feature, allowing users to have two-way conversations with Gemini. Let’s explore more about it.

The feature was showcased as a fullscreen experience at I/O 2024. Gemini Live will transform how you interact with your AI chatbot, functioning even in the background and on your lock screen. Figure 1 shows Gemini Live to Enable AI Use from Lock Screen.

How can we be so confident that Google might unveil it soon? This new feature was found in the latest beta version (15.27) of the Google app. A “background_mode” feature was also spotted, allowing users to “continue Gemini Live chats while using other apps or when the screen is locked.”

How to Use Gemini Live?

This is a significant advancement, as currently, both Google Assistant and Gemini interactions cease when the app is not in use or the phone is locked. With this feature, users will be able to use other apps while conversing with Gemini to obtain any additional information they need.

If you want to end the session, you can simply say “Stop” to Gemini Live or find the notification and tap on it to terminate the chat.

In the future, we may be able to perform complex tasks on the Gemini app, including using it on the lock screen, as mentioned earlier. Users will have access to Messages, Workspace, and Home Automation options directly from the lock screen. Additionally, extensions for Google Maps, YouTube, Google Flights, and Google Hotels will be enabled on the lock screen by default.

To enhance the experience even more, users will be able to utilize the “Spoken message notifications” feature, which enables Gemini to read messages aloud.
