New mobility services provide a continuum of choices that cover many types of personal trips, and together with a robust public transit system, allow people to get to work, run errands, and get to all the places they need to go in daily life without the need for a personal vehicle.

The Shared Mobility Typology provides an overview of the variety of mobility service models in a pre-COVID-19 environment. We will provide updates as public and private sectors make long-term changes. [1]

Shared mobility solutions is shown in figure 1. Shared mobility is the shared use of a vehicle, motorcycle, scooter, bicycle, or other travel mode. Shared mobility provides users with short-term access to one of these modes of travel as they are needed. [2]

Public transit and traditional carpooling and vanpooling are the original forms of shared mobility. Some of today’s new shared mobility options are carsharing, ridesourcing, and microtransit, as well as micromobility (transportation modes smaller than a car), such as bikesharing and shared scooters. Reservations, access (e.g., unlocking/locking a shared bike), real-time location tracking, and payment can all be done via apps on your smartphone or computer. [3]

Shared mobility solutions offer several advantages:

  • Cost-effective
  • Reduced traffic congestion
  • Improved air quality
  • Flexibility
  • Increased accessibility
  • Reduced parking demand
  • Reduced carbon footprint

Shared mobility solutions have the potential to provide more sustainable, accessible, and cost-effective transportation options for individuals and communities.

Shared mobility is an innovative and sustainable approach to transportation that offers several advantages. By sharing vehicles or using shared mobility services, individuals can reduce their transportation costs, improve accessibility, and contribute to a more sustainable transportation system.

Shared mobility has the potential to transform the way we think about transportation, making it more sustainable, affordable, and accessible for everyone. As technology continues to evolve and new innovations emerge, the future of shared mobility looks bright, and we can expect to see continued growth and adoption of these solutions in the years to come.
