Google's Inaugural Satellite Designed for Wildfire Detection Is Now in Orbit
The first satellite in a groundbreaking constellation designed to detect wildfires early and accurately across the globe has now reached Earth's orbit, potentially revolutionizing how we respond to unplanned infernos.
Known as the FireSat constellation, this network will eventually consist of over 50 satellites dedicated to fire detection and tracking. The initiative is led by the nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance, with key contributors including Google and Silicon Valley-based space services startup Muon Space.

Advancing Wildfire Detection
According to Google, existing satellite systems rely on low-resolution imagery and can only scan a given area every 12 hours, detecting fires only after they have grown to several acres [1]. In contrast, FireSat is designed to spot wildfires as small as 270 square feet (25 square meters)—roughly the size of a classroom—while providing high-resolution updates every 20 minutes.Figure 1 shows Google’s first wildfire detection satellite is now in orbit.
Despite being in development for just over a year, FireSat satellites are equipped with custom-built six-band multispectral infrared cameras. These cameras capture detailed images that allow machine learning algorithms to accurately differentiate wildfires from other sources of heat, such as industrial smokestacks.
AI-Powered Fire Monitoring
By analyzing images from a specific location and comparing them with thousands of past observations, FireSat’s AI can reliably detect active wildfires. The system also predicts how a fire might spread, aiding firefighters in making informed decisions to contain and extinguish blazes more efficiently.
This technology could significantly reduce the widespread destruction of forests, urban areas, and communities caused by wildfires each year [2]. For example, the devastating wildfires that tore through Los Angeles in January caused an estimated $250 billion in damages.
Muon Space is currently developing three additional satellites, set to launch next year. The complete FireSat constellation is expected to be fully operational by 2030.
