LEGO’s new Smart Brick technology is expanding beyond its initial releases, with upcoming Pokémon-themed sets introducing more interactive building experiences. After testing the new collections ahead of launch, the sets suggest that LEGO is making significant progress in combining traditional construction play with digital features and interactive world-building.

The LEGO Pokémon Smart Play collection follows a similar structure to the Star Wars sets, offering both complete builds with built-in Smart Bricks and compatible sets that connect with bricks from other collections. However, the Pokémon series places a stronger focus on the franchise’s video game-inspired features, bringing interactive elements like training and battling into the building experience.

LEGO Pokémon Smart Play brings game-like interactions to physical builds by allowing Pokémon figures with Smart Bricks to make sounds, respond to nearby devices, and even display behaviors like sleeping. When two compatible Pokémon are placed together, they can interact and create animated-style moments inspired by the Pokémon world. Figure 1 shows LEGO Pokémon Smart Play Brings Battles to Life.

The sets also introduce battle features, where Pokémon can fight while considering factors such as type advantages and health points. Players can restore defeated Pokémon with virtual-style potions and use training accessories to improve their Pokémon’s abilities, creating a more interactive experience that mirrors the video games.

The LEGO Pokémon Smart Play sets offer a more immersive experience than traditional themed builds by capturing the core feel of the Pokémon games in physical form. While the Star Wars sets focus more on recreating cinematic scenes, the Pokémon collection emphasizes interaction, exploration, and play-driven experiences. The result is a creative and engaging experience that can feel especially exciting for young Pokémon fans.

LEGO has added several creative details that make the Pokémon Smart Play sets more engaging. Players can build interactive items like a sandwich to feed their Pokémon or use vehicles such as Squirtle’s buggy with sound effects powered by the Smart Brick. Additional touches, including Mewtwo’s LEGO Master Ball and updated Smart Tags featuring support Pokémon portraits and Pokédex numbers, add extra charm for fans.

Each LEGO Pokémon Smart Play figure features its own unique cry, along with sounds for battles and other interactions. However, the audio does not closely match the classic 8-bit cries from the Game Boy games or the sounds from modern Pokémon titles. Instead, LEGO has created its own playful interpretations that add humor and personality to the experience.

While the LEGO Pokémon Smart Play sets successfully capture the spirit of the franchise, some character designs have mixed results. The blocky LEGO style works well for certain Pokémon like Geodude and Bidoof, but others, such as Jigglypuff and Jolteon, can appear slightly unusual. Meanwhile, more detailed builds like Lapras and Charizard better match their original designs, with only minor design limitations.

Overall, the collection impressed by giving Pokémon a unique LEGO-inspired identity while creating an enjoyable experience separate from the games, movies, and shows. With sets available across a wide price range, the lineup offers options for different fans and budgets.
