The next major release for Dungeons & Dragons introduces its first large-scale adventure in several years. After a slow rollout following a major team restructuring, D&D 5.5e has expanded with updated core rulebooks and campaign settings for the Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft. This release fills one of the last major gaps in the new edition by adding a full-length adventure.

Arcana Unleashed marks the return of D&D’s signature large-scale adventure campaigns as part of the upcoming "Season of Magic" release. The core book expands high-magic gameplay with new spellcasting options, evolving magic items, arcane factions, and world-shaping threats. It is accompanied by Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, a high-level adventure for characters of levels 11–20, set in the dangerous realm of Thay, home to the infamous Red Wizards.

At 128 pages, Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall is smaller than many classic D&D 5e campaigns, which often exceeded 250 pages, but it still promises a substantial adventure. Designed for characters advancing from levels 11 to 20, the campaign follows a magical spy-thriller storyline set in Thay, where players must navigate the dangerous politics of the Red Wizards before ultimately confronting the immortal lich ruler, Szass Tam. Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall features a complete adventure for levels 11–20, along with a 24-page guide to Thay covering its provinces, Red Wizard politics, society, and key leaders. The book also includes 14 magical items, six high-level creatures—including a stat block and gameplay guidance for Szass Tam—more than 20 adventure maps across five chapters, and tips for running magical spy-thriller campaigns set in Thay.

The core Arcana Unleashed book introduces eight new or revised subclasses, 33 updated spells, 19 magical creatures, nine arcane factions, six group patrons, 47 magical items, 10 backgrounds, and more than 20 feats centered on magical traditions. It also includes Tomb of the Shadow Serpents, a short introductory adventure for levels 1–2, while pre-order bonuses add exclusive digital content and a mini adventure. The books are available individually or in a bundle that includes the Arcana Unleashed Map Pack.

The new subclasses are expected to include finalized versions of those previously introduced in the Unearthed Arcana playtests. Fans can also preview the updated rules in action through the second season of the official Dungeons & Dragons actual-play series, Dungeon Masters, where a new cast adventure explores the dangerous world of the Red Wizards under the guidance of DM Jasmine Bhullar.

While Arcana Unleashed introduces a wealth of new gameplay options, Deadfall may be the release that truly tests D&D 5.5e’s direction [1]. As the edition continues to evolve, it marks the return of the large-scale adventure campaigns that helped define D&D 5e after a period focused on campaign settings and shorter adventures. The success of Deadfall could show whether D&D 5.5e can recapture one of the most popular aspects of its predecessor.
