Wizards of the Coast revealed at Gen Con that its Universes Beyond crossover strategy will expand into Dungeons & Dragons, beginning with Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft. The announcement is significant for tabletop RPG fans and strongly suggests that World of Warcraft could also receive a Magic: The Gathering crossover set in the near future.

Wizards revealed three upcoming Magic Multiverse sets at MagicCon: Amsterdam, but the company is expected to hold back its next Universes Beyond announcements until MagicCon: Atlanta. One of the upcoming crossover sets is likely connected to the ongoing Marvel partnership, following previous releases, leaving two additional slots to be revealed, with one scheduled to launch on April 9.

Although some players remain opposed to the entire Universes Beyond concept, the strongest criticism has often targeted crossovers that feel distant from Magic’s traditional fantasy style, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the upcoming Star Trek set. However, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks indicated that the 2027 Universes Beyond collaborations will focus more on partners closer to the game’s fantasy roots. Figure 1 shows Magic Meets World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft is a natural fit for a future Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond set because both games share many fantasy elements, including creatures, spells, equipment, and expansive worlds. Azeroth’s locations and factions could easily translate into Magic’s color system, making the crossover highly compatible.

The collaboration would also build on Wizards of the Coast’s existing history of connecting Magic and Dungeons & Dragons, while allowing the company to reuse creative assets across both games. Previous projects like Adventures in the Forgotten Realms and D&D expansions inspired by Magic worlds have already demonstrated the potential of these crossovers.

D&D creative leader Laura Hohman said Wizards of the Coast will continue evaluating the timing and strategy of future releases while focusing on the upcoming World of Warcraft collaboration. Although a direct overlap between projects was not confirmed, the company remains committed to choosing the best approach for each partnership.

With the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game discontinued since 2013 and largely replaced by Hearthstone, a potential Magic crossover is unlikely to create major conflicts. Wizards remains focused on physical card sales, while Blizzard is unlikely to view Magic: The Gathering Arena as a significant threat.

The upcoming Star Wars collaboration for Dungeons & Dragons could create more challenges for a potential Magic: The Gathering crossover because Star Wars: Unlimited is already an active trading card game with a growing competitive community [1]. Earlier rumors of a Magic Star Wars set were linked to a printing error, leaving the possibility of a future crossover uncertain.

However, Star Wars still fits Magic’s broader fantasy style, with opportunities to feature iconic characters, creatures, technology, and equipment. If Wizards can avoid competition concerns with existing games, a Star Wars Magic set could become another major Universes Beyond release alongside likely future collaborations such as Marvel and World of Warcraft.
