Micron Invests $3 Billion to Strengthen America's Chip Supply Chain

Micron Technology has announced plans to invest up to $3 billion to reinforce the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, with a major focus on expanding domestic production of silicon wafers—the essential building blocks of advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

The investment is designed to secure a stable supply of critical materials as demand continues to grow for high-performance memory and storage solutions powering AI, data centers, autonomous computing, and other compute-intensive applications.

Expanding Domestic Wafer Production

As part of the initiative, Micron will provide $500 million in strategic financing to Global Wafers Co. Ltd. to expand its 300 mm silicon wafer manufacturing facility in Sherman, Texas. The two companies will also enter a 10-year supply agreement, ensuring Micron long-term access to domestically produced silicon wafers for its U.S. chip manufacturing operations.

Global Wafers noted that its Sherman facility is currently the only participant in the CHIPS for America Program capable of producing advanced 300 mm raw silicon wafers within the United States, making it a key contributor to strengthening the nation's semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. Strengthening the Foundation of Chip Manufacturing

Silicon wafers serve as the foundation of virtually every semiconductor device. Memory chips, processors, and other integrated circuits are manufactured by building multiple layers of electronic components on these precision-engineered wafers, making a reliable wafer supply essential to the semiconductor industry.

Micron's investment reflects a broader industry shift toward localizing the production of critical materials. Recent global supply chain disruptions have highlighted the importance of domestic manufacturing, prompting both government and industry to reduce dependence on overseas suppliers and build a more resilient semiconductor ecosystem.

According to Ben Tessone, Senior Vice President and Chief Procurement Officer at Micron, securing a dependable supply of key manufacturing materials is vital to the company's long-term technology roadmap. He noted that the investment strengthens supplier partnerships, enhances supply assurance, and supports continued expansion of semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure across the United States.

Advancing Future Wafer Technologies

Beyond expanding manufacturing capacity, Micron and Global Wafers plan to collaborate on the development of next-generation silicon wafer technologies and advanced manufacturing processes to support future semiconductor innovations.

Doris Hsu, Chairperson and CEO of Global Wafers, described Micron as a long-standing strategic partner and said the collaboration will help ensure a stable domestic supply of critical semiconductor materials [1]. She also emphasized that Global Wafers remains the only company participating in the CHIPS for America Program capable of manufacturing advanced 300 mm raw silicon wafers within the United States.

The proposed investment remains subject to final agreements and regulatory approvals. Once completed, it is expected to strengthen America's semiconductor supply chain while supporting the rapidly increasing demand for advanced memory technologies that power next-generation computing infrastructure.

By investing across the entire semiconductor production chain—from raw silicon wafers to finished chips—Micron is reinforcing the foundation of domestic chip manufacturing and helping position the United States for long-term leadership in advanced semiconductor technology.
