Revolutionary Mass Spectrometry System Detects Billions of Molecules at Once

Mass spectrometry has long been one of the most important tools for identifying and measuring molecules in biological and chemical samples. Despite its widespread use, most existing instruments still analyze molecules one at a time or in very small groups, limiting speed, efficiency, and the ability to detect rare but significant compounds.

Researchers now report a major advance that could help overcome these limitations. A new prototype system called MultiQ-IT is designed to process vast numbers of molecules simultaneously, potentially paving the way for a new generation of faster and more sensitive mass spectrometry instruments. The breakthrough could eventually enable scientists to map the complete molecular composition of individual cells, track thousands of chemical reactions at once, and accelerate research in areas ranging from disease diagnostics to drug discovery. Rockefeller University researchers have developed MultiQ-IT, a prototype mass spectrometry system designed to analyze large numbers of molecules simultaneously. Inspired by the way molecules move through cellular nuclear pores, the technology uses hundreds of tiny ports to process multiple ion streams in parallel instead of one at a time.

The system demonstrated major performance gains, holding up to 10 billion charges at once—about 1,000 times more than conventional ion traps—and improving signal detection by up to 100-fold [1]. Although still a proof of concept, MultiQ-IT could pave the way for faster, more sensitive molecular analysis, advancing fields such as single-cell research, proteomics, and drug discovery.

If further developed, the technology could transform biological research, clinical diagnostics, and pharmaceutical development by enabling scientists to analyze molecular information on a scale that was previously impossible.
