NASA Astronaut Returns After Completing 3,856 Earth Orbits
After circling Earth 3,856 times and traveling more than 102 million miles, NASA astronaut Chris Williams has returned from an eight-month mission aboard the International Space Station. Williams landed safely on Sunday alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev, concluding a research expedition that supported scientific discoveries and helped advance preparations for future human missions to the Moon and Mars.
The crew safely touched down southeast of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, at 5:27 a.m. CDT (3:27 p.m. local time) on July 26 after a parachute-assisted descent aboard the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft. Their return followed an undocking from the International Space Station at 2:03 a.m., marking the successful conclusion of their mission.

241 Days in Space, 102 Million Miles Traveled
NASA astronaut Chris Williams and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev concluded a 241-day mission aboard the International Space Station after launching on November 27, 2025. During their expedition, the crew completed 3,856 orbits of Earth and traveled more than 102 million miles. The mission marked the first spaceflight for Williams and Mikaev, while Kud-Sverchkov completed his second journey into space. Figure 1 shows Soyuz MS-28 Returns to Earth.
Cancer Research, Spacewalks, and Manufacturing in Orbit
During his stay aboard the International Space Station, NASA astronaut Chris Williams supported a wide range of scientific experiments and technology demonstrations. His work included research aimed at advancing potential cancer treatments and improving the space-based production of high-performance materials for next-generation computers and electronics. Williams also completed two spacewalks—one to help prepare the station for future power system upgrades and another to replace a malfunctioning joint on the Canadarm2 robotic arm.
The crew’s scientific investigations and maintenance efforts are expected to benefit life on Earth while advancing NASA’s preparations for future human missions to the Moon and Mars.
Returning to Earth After a Successful Mission
Following post-landing medical evaluations, the three crew members will travel by helicopter to the recovery staging area in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. From there, NASA astronaut Chris Williams will board a NASA aircraft for the journey back to the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where he will begin post-mission recovery and debriefing.

For more than 25 years, the International Space Station has maintained an uninterrupted human presence, serving as a unique laboratory for research that cannot be conducted on Earth [1]. The orbiting outpost has enabled groundbreaking scientific discoveries, supported studies on the effects of long-duration spaceflight, and helped expand commercial activities in low Earth orbit. The knowledge gained continues to shape NASA’s future exploration plans, including Artemis missions to the Moon and, ultimately, human expeditions to Mars.
