Stainless is a platform that automates the creation and upkeep of SDKs for APIs across multiple programming languages. Following its acquisition by Anthropic, the company intends to phase out its hosted products over time. While current customers will continue to have access to their existing SDKs, competing firms may be forced to adopt other tools or infrastructure to replace Stainless’s services.

AI company Anthropic has acquired Stainless, a developer tools startup whose services are used across the AI industry, including by competitors like OpenAI and Google. While the financial terms were not officially disclosed, reports indicate the deal could be worth over $300 million.

Founded in 2022 by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray, Stainless gained popularity for simplifying the creation and maintenance of software development kits (SDKs) used to connect applications with APIs across languages like Python, Go, Java, Kotlin, and TypeScript. Its automated system that updates SDKs when APIs change made it especially valuable for AI companies building agents and integration-heavy services. Anthropic had already been using Stainless to power its official SDKs for several years. Following the acquisition, however, the company plans to gradually discontinue Stainless’s hosted products, including its SDK generation platform.

Despite the planned shutdown of its hosted services, Anthropic stated that customers will still own and be able to edit and extend the SDKs they have already generated. Stainless tools had also been adopted by several major AI firms and cloud providers beyond Anthropic.

With the startup now integrated into Anthropic, rival companies may have to find alternative solutions for SDK management and API integration. In a statement, founder Alex Rattray said the move felt like a natural progression after years of collaboration between the two companies, and noted that the Stainless team will continue working on developer infrastructure while supporting Anthropic’s broader AI platform initiatives.
