Google Introduces 'Ask About This PDF' Feature for Gemini on Android: Here's How It Works
Google is introducing a new feature for the Gemini Assistant on the Android app, enabling users to ask questions about a PDF file displayed on their screen. The "Ask about this PDF" option is being gradually rolled out in India, initially for Pixel 9 series smartphones.
Figure 1. Google Launches 'Ask About This PDF' Feature for Gemini on Android: How It Functions.
During testing on the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the feature appeared as a floating "Ask about this PDF" bar above the Gemini Assistant overlay, which can be accessed by long-pressing the power button. It's important to note that this floating button only appears when a PDF is opened in the Google Files app, not in the Google Drive PDF viewer.
Tapping the new "Ask about this PDF" button uploads the entire PDF file to Gemini AI, in contrast to the "Ask about this screen" button, which only uploads a screenshot of what's visible on the screen at that moment. This allows Gemini Assistant to access all the data within the document, improving the accuracy of its response to the user's query.
During the file upload process, users can enter their query in the "Ask Gemini" field. However, the button to submit the question remains inactive until the PDF upload is complete.
Google is rolling out a new functionality for the Gemini Assistant on Android, enabling users to interact with PDFs directly. By tapping on the new "Ask about this PDF" button, users can query Gemini AI about the contents of the PDF they have open on their screen. The feature is being gradually introduced, starting with the Pixel 9 series smartphones in India.
How It Works: The "Ask About This PDF" Button
When a user opens a PDF in the Google Files app, the "Ask about this PDF" button appears as a floating bar above the Gemini Assistant overlay. This button gives users a way to upload the entire document to Gemini, unlike the "Ask about this screen" button, which only uploads a screenshot.
PDF Upload Process
Once the "Ask about this PDF" button is tapped, the entire PDF file is uploaded to Gemini AI. This allows the assistant to have access to all the data within the document, helping it generate more accurate and comprehensive responses to user queries about the content.
Asking Questions
While the PDF is being uploaded, users can begin typing their query in the "Ask Gemini" field. This means you can prepare your question in advance, although the question submission button remains inactive until the upload is finished.
Limitations and Current Availability
Currently, the "Ask about this PDF" feature is limited to the Google Files app, so it only works with PDFs opened there—not in Google Drive’s PDF viewer. Also, the feature is still being rolled out and is currently only available on select devices, starting with the Pixel 9 series in India.
This step-by-step breakdown highlights the key elements of the new feature and its practical use on Android devices.
Seamless Interaction with PDFs
The introduction of the "Ask About This PDF" button allows users to interact more deeply with PDFs without leaving the Google Files app. By uploading the entire document to Gemini AI, users can ask specific questions about the content, whether it's a report, guide, or any other document. The feature eliminates the need to manually search through PDFs, making it easier to get relevant answers from the text.
Enhanced AI Responses
Unlike traditional methods of querying documents, the "Ask About This PDF" feature provides Gemini with full access to the document’s content, ensuring that responses are based on the document as a whole, rather than just snippets or screenshots. This enables Gemini to deliver more precise and contextually accurate answers, such as summarizing sections, explaining details, or identifying key points within the PDF.
Future Availability and Potential Enhancements
As the feature rolls out to more regions and devices, Google may introduce further enhancements to the "Ask About This PDF" function. This could include integration with more apps beyond Google Files and improvements in response accuracy and speed. Additionally, future updates might bring support for more complex document formats or allow users to ask follow-up questions based on the PDF’s content, making the assistant even more versatile and user-friendly.
These three parts outline the potential impact of the feature on how users interact with PDFs and how Google might expand and improve its functionality in the future.
