In an interview with Mobility Outlook, Dhritisunder Bhattacharya, Senior General Manager R&D for India & SEA at 3M, highlighted the company’s focus on recyclability as a cornerstone of its sustainability mission. By increasing the recycled content in its acoustic materials, 3M has made significant strides, raising its usage of recycled materials from 17% to 30% over the past few years. The company aims to surpass 70% by 2027, underscoring its dedication to combining high performance with environmental stewardship. Driving Sustainability Through Material Science

At the heart of 3M’s operations is a commitment to sustainability, prioritizing renewable energy adoption and decarbonization. Dedicated teams across the globe are innovating solutions to improve air quality and minimize environmental impact. While many of these developments are in their nascent stages, 3M's sustainability ethos is evident. Every new product the company launches includes a “Sustainability Value Commitment Statement,” ensuring environmental considerations are embedded throughout the design, manufacturing, and lifecycle of its offerings.

Consider 3M’s pivotal role in India’s transition to Bharat Stage-6 (BS-6) emission standards. This significant shift required a complete overhaul of vehicle emission systems. While advanced nations took over six years to transition from Euro-4 to Euro-6 standards, India achieved this milestone in under three years. The automotive industry had to revamp its production lines to meet these stringent emission norms, with 3M playing an integral part in the process. The transition demanded innovations in product materials and manufacturing methods, demonstrating 3M’s agility and expertise in addressing the evolving demands of industries, all while maintaining a sustainability-driven approach.

Driving Digitization: Shaping the Future of Technology

The digital revolution is not only about software but also relies heavily on hardware innovations—an area where 3M excels. The company’s expertise in material science plays a vital role in enhancing the efficiency of digital devices, ranging from handheld gadgets to advanced augmented and virtual reality systems. 3M has utilized its film and optics technologies to improve the lenses used in AR and VR devices, ensuring superior clarity and performance.

In the electronics sector, 3M’s materials are key to managing the growing need for thermal and electrical efficiency. As industries push toward smaller, more intricate designs, such as the potential development of three-dimensional PCBs, 3M’s solutions in packaging, thermal management, and conductivity are becoming indispensable. In data centers, where high-speed electronic devices operate at immense volumes, 3M’s materials play a crucial role in optimizing heat dissipation and system performance, ensuring the infrastructure powering the digital revolution remains robust.

Merging Electronics with Mobility

As digital technologies increasingly integrate with the automotive industry, vehicles are evolving into hubs of connectivity and intelligence. From telematics to autonomous systems, electronics now form the backbone of modern vehicles. 3M’s contributions extend to innovations in light management, display control, and material science, all of which enhance the driving experience while prioritizing safety.

Dynamic experiences and ensuring driver safety. 3M’s expertise in light and display management is helping shape a future where in-car screens deliver immersive, yet controlled, interactions. As car designs become increasingly glass-intensive, the company is pioneering solutions to integrate optics, fabric, and light management, enabling innovative features like illuminated interiors and mood-responsive environments.

The shift to electric mobility further amplifies the need for cutting-edge materials. As vehicles incorporate more electronics into compact spaces, thermal and electrical efficiency become critical. 3M’s materials play a key role in managing heat and enhancing the functionality of these complex systems, supporting the automotive industry’s transition to a sustainable, electrified future, Bhattacharya emphasized.

A Dynamic Path Forward

The challenges of sustainability, digitization, and automotive innovation are vast and ever-evolving. However, 3M’s role as a catalyst across industries highlights the transformative potential of material science. By bridging the gap between imagination and reality, the company is not only addressing the challenges of today but also shaping the possibilities of tomorrow.

“The definition of what we do in the automotive and electronics sectors is constantly evolving. It is this adaptability and commitment to innovation that positions us at the forefront of a rapidly changing world, ensuring our material science expertise continues to drive progress across sustainability, digitization, and mobility,” Bhattacharya concluded.
