Google's New Anti-Theft Features Make Android Devices Tougher to Steal
Google is rolling out advanced anti-theft features for Android devices, aiming to enhance security and protect user data in the event of theft. These new features, including Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock, are gradually becoming available across devices running Android 10 and above.

The most notable feature is the Theft Detection Lock, which uses machine learning and phone sensors to detect suspicious movements, such as if the phone is abruptly snatched from the user. In such cases, the phone automatically locks, preventing unauthorized access to personal data. This lock activates whether the thief is on foot, a bike, or in a vehicle, ensuring the phone becomes unusable. [1, 2]
The Offline Device Lock further enhances security by locking the phone if it's disconnected from the internet, which is a common tactic used by thieves to prevent location tracking. Even when offline, the phone will lock twice a day to maintain protection. [2]
Additionally, Google has introduced a Remote Lock feature, which allows users to lock their stolen phones remotely via Google's Find My Device service. Users can access this from another phone and trigger a lock by entering a security challenge, ensuring they retain control over their data. [3]
These security measures make Android phones significantly harder to steal, as they render the devices almost unusable without access to personal data. The rollout of these features is happening in phases, and users can expect full availability by the end of the year. [3]
