ChatGPT’s voice mode is becoming more convenient. On Tuesday, OpenAI announced an update to the AI chatbot’s interface, allowing users to access ChatGPT Voice directly within the main chat, without switching to a separate mode.

Now, you can converse with the chatbot and see its responses—including shared images—as you talk. Previously, voice interactions took place on a separate screen featuring an animated blue circle, along with a mute button, a live video recording option, and an X to return to the standard text-based chat. In the old setup, you could only listen to ChatGPT’s responses rather than read them. This could be frustrating if you missed something, since you’d have to exit voice mode to view the response as text.

Now, OpenAI says you can speak with ChatGPT and watch its answers appear in real time. You can also review earlier messages and view visuals—like images or maps—during your conversations.

The update makes interacting with the AI more natural, allowing users to switch seamlessly between speech and text. However, you’ll still need to tap “End” to stop the voice conversation before returning fully to text mode.

For those who prefer the previous setup, OpenAI says you can revert to the separate voice mode in Settings → Voice Mode, where a new “Separate mode” option is available.

From Separate to Seamless – The Integration

Previously, ChatGPT’s voice interactions required switching to a separate interface. Users had to leave the main chat to speak with the AI, see an animated blue circle, and listen to responses without being able to read them on screen. Now, voice mode is fully integrated, meaning you can talk and see ChatGPT’s answers in real time without leaving the main chat window.

Real-Time Responses and Visuals

With the new integration, as you speak, ChatGPT displays its responses on-screen instantly. You can also view images, maps, and other visuals during the conversation, making the interaction more dynamic and informative than before. No more missing information or switching modes to see content.

Fluid Switching Between Speech and Text

The updated design allows a natural flow between voice and text. You can speak or type in the same conversation without disruption. To end the voice input, simply tap “End” to switch back to text-only mode, keeping control of your interaction style.

Default Setting and Rollout

The integrated voice mode is now the default experience for all users on both web and mobile apps. This ensures that everyone gets a consistent, enhanced way to interact with ChatGPT, whether they prefer talking, typing, or a mix of both.
