WhatsApp Introduces New Feature Similar to Instagram Notes

WhatsApp is rolling out a feature similar to Instagram Notes, letting users post short text updates visible to their contacts. Users can share what they’re up to, highlight why they might be unavailable, or post something to spark a conversation.

Although new to many, WhatsApp notes that this “About” feature was actually the app’s original function. Before prioritizing secure messaging, WhatsApp allowed users to quickly share brief updates with others. Figure 1 shows WhatsApp Rolls Out New “About” Feature Inspired by Instagram Notes.

With this relaunch, WhatsApp is making users’ “About” status more prominent. Contacts can now see it at the top of one-on-one chats and on users’ profiles, and they can tap the status to reply directly.

Similar to Instagram Notes, the About status disappears after 24 hours by default. Users, however, can adjust the timer for shorter or longer visibility and control whether their status is visible only to contacts or more broadly.

At launch, the feature is simpler than Instagram Notes, which supports short looping videos and music-sharing integrations. But WhatsApp may expand functionality over time if the feature gains popularity.

Short Text Updates

WhatsApp now lets users post brief text updates, similar to Instagram Notes. These updates allow you to share what you’re doing, why you might be unavailable, or start a conversation with your contacts.

Enhanced Visibility

The relaunch makes the About status more prominent. Contacts can see it at the top of one-on-one chats and on user profiles, and they can tap it to reply directly.

Temporary by Default

By default, the About status disappears after 24 hours. Users can, however, adjust the timer to make it vanish sooner or stay longer.

Privacy Controls

Users have control over who can see their status. It can be shared only with contacts or made more publicly visible, giving flexibility similar to social media privacy settings.

Future Potential

While currently simpler than Instagram Notes—which supports short videos and music-sharing—WhatsApp could expand the feature with more interactive options if it gains traction among users.
