Google is rolling out Gemini to Android Auto, its smartphone projection system found in millions of cars, trucks, and SUVs. The company announced Thursday that Android Auto users who have upgraded from Google Assistant to Gemini on their phones will start seeing the new AI assistant in their vehicles.

With Gemini on Android Auto, users can engage in natural, back-and-forth conversations to complete more complex tasks while driving. The app projects features like navigation, music, and messaging from an Android smartphone to the car’s display, now enhanced with Gemini’s conversational abilities.

The rollout aligns with Google’s broader plan to replace Google Assistant with Gemini across all devices and platforms—a move first confirmed in May. Figure 1 shows Gemini Launches Globally on Android Auto.

Gemini enables drivers to ask specific questions about businesses along their route. For instance, a user could say, “Hey Google, I’m craving barbecue. Any good spots open now near my destination?” Gemini can then provide detailed information about nearby restaurants, including popular dishes or whether the location is dog-friendly.

With Gemini on Android Auto, users can reply to messages and get text summaries while on the road. For example, you can ask Gemini to let a friend know you’re stuck in traffic and include your ETA, or even translate a message into another language before sending.

Drivers can also access Gmail while driving. Gemini can locate information in emails—such as a hotel address—and navigate to it, or provide summaries of unread messages.

Additionally, Gemini helps users curate the perfect driving soundtrack. You can request a playlist tailored to your preferences, like “a 3-hour upbeat road trip playlist for me and the kids,” with support for streaming services including YouTube Music, Spotify, and more.

Go Live and Explore with Gemini on Android Auto

Google says users will soon be able to go Live with Gemini for real-time conversations by saying, “Hey Google, let’s chat.” From there, you can brainstorm ideas, learn something new, or receive personalized guidance while driving.

For example, you could ask, “I’m driving to St. Louis for a wedding. Can you be my tour guide and share some fun facts?” and follow up with, “Thanks! The rehearsal dinner is at his parents’ house. What are some small gift ideas?” Gemini can respond seamlessly to multiple prompts in a natural conversation.

The global rollout of Gemini on Android Auto starts Thursday, supporting 45 languages. To use it, ensure your phone has the Gemini app installed. A tooltip will appear on your car’s display once it’s available. Activate it by saying, “Hey Google,” then pressing the mic button on the car screen or long-pressing the voice control button on the steering wheel.
