Android 16 Rolls Out Enhanced Security and Intelligent Anti-Theft Features
Android 16, the upcoming major update for Android devices, is scheduled to roll out this summer with a strong focus on enhancing user security. Google is introducing a suite of new tools aimed at curbing fraud and preventing phone theft, continuing the momentum from earlier AI-powered features launched in March. These initial tools analyzed message patterns to flag potential scams—now, Google is expanding that capability to catch more sophisticated fraud, including the rise of toll road scams. Additionally, Google Play Protect will be improved for faster detection of malicious apps.

One of the most significant additions in Android 16 is a safeguard against scammers exploiting accessibility permissions. The new system restricts access to these privileges during calls from unknown numbers. Another key feature, Key Verifier, helps prevent impersonation by allowing users to exchange public encryption keys with trusted contacts, making it easier to confirm identities. For those concerned about physical phone theft, Android 16 brings several new protections. The Identity Check feature will now require biometric verification before any sensitive settings can be changed—especially when a user is outside of a trusted location. Initially introduced on select Pixel and Galaxy devices in January, this feature will now be available to more users. It's designed to thwart a common form of theft where criminals observe users entering their passcodes in public spaces like bars or transit stations.
Additional anti-theft enhancements include a security question prompt when attempting to disable remote locking, and tighter restrictions on what can be done after a factory reset. The update will also prevent two-factor authentication codes from appearing on the lock screen if the device has been offline or locked for an extended period.
Another major security feature is Advanced Protection, a consolidated setting that secures multiple aspects of the system under one toggle. Once activated, none of its included features can be turned off, offering a new level of lockdown for cautious users.
Google is also evolving its device tracking system [1]. The current Find My Device is being upgraded to Find Hub, enabling users to track items equipped with Bluetooth tags or smart devices. Devices supporting ultra-wideband (UWB) will benefit from more precise tracking, while satellite support will allow location services even outside of cell coverage zones.
These features were detailed in Google’s Android Show, released on May 13. The presentation also previewed other upgrades like the new Material 3 Expressive design language, expanded Gemini AI integration for Wear OS and Android Auto, and broader security refinements. More AI-related announcements are expected at Google I/O 2025, running from May 20 to 23.
