OpenAI May Soon Allow You To ‘Sign in with ChatGPT’ on Third-Party Apps
OpenAI is considering introducing a "Sign in with ChatGPT" feature that would allow users to access third-party apps using their ChatGPT account, according to a web page published Tuesday. The company is currently assessing developer interest in integrating the service.

With ChatGPT rapidly growing into one of the world’s largest consumer applications — boasting around 600 million monthly active users — OpenAI appears keen to expand its presence in other consumer markets, including online shopping, social media, and personal devices. The potential sign-in feature could position OpenAI to compete more directly with tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, which already offer streamlined sign-in options across a wide array of digital services. Earlier this month, OpenAI rolled out a preview of the “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature for developers through Codex CLI, its open-source AI coding tool for terminals. This feature allowed developers to link their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts with their API accounts. As an incentive, OpenAI offered $5 in API credits to Plus users and $50 to Pro users who signed in using their ChatGPT credentials.
OpenAI appears to be aiming for widespread adoption of its sign-in service across a diverse range of companies. The developer interest form invites organizations to indicate the size of their user base—from small apps with fewer than 1,000 weekly users to large platforms with over 100 million weekly users. It also asks how developers currently monetize AI features and whether they are existing customers of the OpenAI API.
While CEO Sam Altman mentioned in 2023 that a “sign in with OpenAI” feature might be explored in 2024, the company now seems to be actively developing the capability in 2025. However, it remains unclear when the feature will officially launch for ChatGPT users or how many companies have committed to integrating it so far.
What is “Sign in with ChatGPT”?
OpenAI is developing a feature that would let users log into other apps and websites using their ChatGPT account credentials. This is similar to how you might use “Sign in with Google” or “Sign in with Apple” on many platforms today, making it easier and faster to access services without creating new accounts.
Why is OpenAI Doing This?
With around 600 million monthly users, ChatGPT has become one of the largest consumer AI platforms globally. OpenAI wants to leverage this popularity to expand beyond just AI chat into areas like online shopping, social media, and more. Offering a single sign-in option can boost adoption and create a seamless experience across many apps.
Early Developer Preview and Incentives
OpenAI has already tested a preview of this feature with developers via Codex CLI, an AI coding tool. Developers could link their ChatGPT accounts to API accounts, and OpenAI incentivized this with API credit rewards ($5 for Plus users and $50 for Pro users) to encourage early adoption and feedback.
Broad Interest from Developers and Companies
OpenAI is seeking input from a wide variety of companies—from small startups with a few hundred users to massive platforms with over 100 million users. They want to understand how companies currently use AI features and whether they already work with OpenAI’s API, to tailor the sign-in service accordingly.
What’s Next and When Will It Launch?
Although the idea was mentioned by CEO Sam Altman as early as 2023, OpenAI is now actively building the feature in 2025. There’s no official launch date yet, and it’s unclear how many companies have signed up to participate. Still, the move signals OpenAI’s ambitions to become a major player in consumer tech ecosystems alongside giants like Apple and Google.
