The emergency satellite system is designed to help users in critical situations when cellular or Wi-Fi service is unavailable. It allows users to contact emergency services, send satellite texts, share information with emergency contacts, or request roadside assistance. The iOS 18.5 update grants access to satellite services from carriers like T-Mobile (with Starlink). Users can check for availability in the Cellular menu within their iPhone Settings.

This feature has already been credited with saving lives, helping lost hikers, aiding people in wildfires, and more.

In addition to the expanded satellite service, iPhone 13 owners will benefit from smaller updates, such as a new Screen Time feature that alerts parents if their child enters the parent’s passcode to access permissions. Other updates include a revamped Mail app with an "All Mail" tab, a new Pride wallpaper, and an easier subscription process for the Apple TV app on smart TVs or connected devices. Apple also addressed a bug where the Apple Vision Pro app would launch with a black screen, along with other bug fixes for Siri and enterprise apps.

Expanded Satellite Emergency Features

Apple’s iOS 18.5 update brings emergency satellite capabilities to iPhone 13 users for the first time. Previously, this feature was limited to iPhone 14 and newer models. This system allows iPhone users to connect with emergency services or send a text through satellite when no cellular or Wi-Fi connection is available.

How the Emergency Satellite System Works

The satellite emergency system enables users to contact emergency services, send messages via satellite, share locations with emergency contacts, or request roadside assistance, all without a traditional phone signal. It is intended to be used in critical situations like hiking, off-grid activities, or during natural disasters.

Accessing the Satellite Feature

iPhone 13 owners can now use satellite connectivity through supported carriers like T-Mobile, which utilizes Starlink. Users can check for availability by navigating to the Cellular menu in their Settings app to confirm whether the satellite service is active in their region.

Life-Saving Impact

Since its initial rollout, the emergency satellite feature has been credited with saving lives. Stories have emerged about people using the system to get rescued after becoming lost in remote areas, escaping wildfires, or in other dire situations where no other means of communication were available.

Additional Updates in iOS 18.5

Along with satellite service expansion, iOS 18.5 introduces other features, such as improved parental controls in Screen Time, a more user-friendly Mail app, a new Pride wallpaper, and enhanced Apple TV app functionality. Apple also fixed bugs affecting the Apple Vision Pro app and improved performance across other apps like Siri and enterprise software.
