FortiOS 7.6 Empowers Seamless Post-Quantum Transition with Built-In Quantum-Safe Security

Traditional encryption has safeguarded data for years, but the emergence of quantum computing threatens its effectiveness. With the power to perform massive calculations at unmatched speeds, quantum computers could render current encryption methods obsolete, posing serious risks to cybersecurity. This has led some cybercriminals to adopt a “harvest now, decrypt later” approach—collecting encrypted data now to decrypt it once quantum technology matures. Sectors like finance, healthcare, telecom, and government, where sensitive data must remain secure long-term, must urgently adopt quantum-resilient cybersecurity measures.

FortiOS and the Rising Challenge of Quantum Threats

Recognizing the growing quantum threat, Fortinet has strengthened its flagship operating system, FortiOS. This integrated platform combines security and networking into a unified solution. With the release of FortiOS 7.6, organizations using FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW) and Fortinet Secure SD-WAN now gain access to built-in quantum-safe capabilities. Figure 1 shows FortiOS: The Core of Fortinet’s Security Fabric.

Key Quantum-Safe Enhancements Introduced in FortiOS

FortiOS introduces several advanced quantum-safe features to strengthen cybersecurity against emerging quantum threats:

  • Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC): FortiOS incorporates NIST-approved post-quantum algorithms like ML-KEM, along with promising candidates such as BIKE, HQC, and Frodo, all designed to withstand quantum-level attacks.
  • Quantum Key Distribution (QKD): Built on quantum mechanics, QKD enables secure key exchanges by detecting any interception attempts. Since FortiOS 7.4, the system has supported plug-and-play integration with major QKD vendors through standardized interfaces, reinforcing Fortinet’s commitment to quantum-resilient security.
  • Algorithm Stacking: By layering multiple cryptographic methods, FortiOS increases network defense complexity, making unauthorized decryption far more difficult—even for quantum-enabled attackers.
  • Hybrid Security Mode: This feature allows organizations to transition smoothly from traditional public-key encryption to quantum-safe methods, minimizing disruption during the shift.
  • User-Friendly Management: FortiOS offers an intuitive interface that simplifies the setup of quantum-safe configurations, enabling administrators to deploy strong protections without needing in-depth quantum expertise.

Michael Xie, Founder, President, and CTO of Fortinet, emphasized the company’s commitment to equipping customers with advanced technology to defend against emerging threats. As quantum computing progresses, he affirmed that organizations can rely on Fortinet’s innovation and leadership to protect their critical data and ensure future-ready infrastructure. He noted that many enterprises are proactively seeking to safeguard their networks from quantum-driven risks, which is why Fortinet has already made quantum-safe features available for FortiGate NGFW and Secure SD-WAN users—enabling a confident, seamless move toward post-quantum security.

Advancing Quantum-Resilient Cybersecurity

A key challenge with advanced cryptography is the risk of reduced system performance. Fortinet overcomes this by adhering to its core design principle—delivering quantum-safe features without sacrificing network throughput or scalability. This allows businesses to protect their data now while maintaining smooth, uninterrupted operations. Additionally, Fortinet offers these quantum capabilities consistently across its platforms at no extra cost, providing a cost-effective model for quantum readiness and enabling organizations to transition efficiently.

Fortinet Sets New Benchmark for Cyber Resilience?

With Fortinet’s forward-looking enhancements to FortiOS, organizations in sectors like government, healthcare, and more can approach the post-quantum era with greater confidence [1]. Embracing these technologies today equips enterprises to tackle future security challenges, ensuring robust data protection against emerging computational threats.
