E Ink Gaming Slate Brings You Back To 80s Text Adventures
In the early days of home computing, onscreen graphics were limited, so text-based adventure games dominated the gaming scene. The Ink Console seeks to revive this retro charm by merging an e-reader with a gaming platform.

The Ink Console is the brainchild of Daniel Puchau, also known as Dana from GreenBoy Games in the gaming community. He explains that the project was born from a desire to introduce the magic of classic text adventures, like the 1980s game Zork I, to a new generation unfamiliar with these kinds of games. Figure 1 shows E Ink Gaming Slate Revives 80s Text Adventure Classics.
At its core, the Ink Console is an e-reader with a 7.5-inch E Ink display boasting an 800 x 480 resolution. Powered by a 32-bit dual-core processor, it features a modest 4MB of flash memory and 8MB of PSRAM, though it does offer Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Games are loaded onto the device through a built-in SD card reader.
The games, called Gamebooks, are text-based adventures presented as interactive stories. These can range from thrilling expeditions and deep-sea explorations to immersive sci-fi and fantasy narratives. What's exciting is that these Gamebooks won't be solely created by the Ink Console team but will also come from the player community, thanks to an open-source Software Development Kit (SDK).
The SDK, called You Create, is designed to empower creators—whether they are writers, artists, game designers, or anyone with a passion for storytelling. It enables users to create Gamebooks for the Ink Console without the need for coding skills. According to the project page on Crowd Supply, "Whether you're a seasoned developer or a first-time creator, this toolkit gives you everything you need to bring immersive, interactive stories to life."
As players navigate the story and make decisions that shape the plot, they can collect items—like spells, weapons, or food—into an inventory locker to help overcome challenges that arise during the game.
The device includes an analog joystick for navigation and a potentiometer for adjusting settings and controlling functions. Puchau is also considering the addition of a mini keyboard module for conversational games, though this is still in the concept stage. Other confirmed features include a built-in mono speaker, a 3.5mm audio jack, and 2-channel stereo output. The 5,000mAh battery is rechargeable via USB-C.
While the price of this retro-modern gadget remains a mystery, the project is set to launch on Crowd Supply early next month, at which point more details, including the cost, will be revealed. Video footage of working prototypes is on the way, but for now, a teaser is available to give a glimpse of what’s to come.
