Mohamed Abazeed, a professor at Northwestern University, views DeepSeek’s disruption as largely beneficial—unless you're an investor in companies like Nvidia. He highlights its open-source nature as a major advantage, allowing developers to modify and adapt the model to their specific needs.

“It will allow developers to access, modify, and implement the model freely,” Abazeed explains. “This openness is a distinguishing factor from other AI models.”

Security Concerns Loom

However, not everyone shares Abazeed’s optimism. Daniel Khashabi, a computer science professor at Johns Hopkins University, acknowledges DeepSeek’s speed and accuracy but raises concerns about its Chinese origins.

“While the model may appear competent based on performance in a few popular benchmarks, it may exhibit various biases and even adversarial behaviors that may not be immediately obvious to most users,” Khashabi warns. “There is a clear security threat here.”

He advises developers working with DeepSeek to exercise caution, closely monitoring its output to ensure it aligns with intended behavior. This, he notes, is not just a concern for DeepSeek but for any software developed with limited transparency or documentation.
