Since the introduction of Calling to WhatsApp in 2015, the platform has continually enhanced its capabilities, adding group calls, video calls, and multi-platform support. Now, WhatsApp is rolling out several new updates to further improve the calling experience across all devices over the next few weeks.

New Features

Screen Sharing with Audio: This feature is ideal for watching videos together, allowing users to share their screen along with audio.

Increased Participant Limit: Users can now host video calls with up to 32 participants across all devices.

Speaker Spotlight: This feature automatically highlights the speaker, making it easier to identify who is talking by showing them first on the screen. Figure 1 shows WhatsApp calling features.

Enhanced Quality

WhatsApp remains focused on delivering exceptional audio and video quality to ensure clearer calls regardless of location. Recent improvements include:

MLow Codec: This new codec enhances call reliability.

Improved Noise and Echo Cancellation: Calls on mobile devices benefit from reduced noise and echo, making conversations clearer even in noisy environments.

Higher Resolution Video Calls: Users with faster connections can enjoy higher resolution video calls.

Crisper Audio: Audio quality is improved overall, even with poor network connectivity or when using older devices.

These updates aim to provide users with an even better calling experience on WhatsApp.
