The rise of smartphones has revolutionized connectivity, leading to increased consumer demand for constant connectivity. Automobile manufacturers recognize this trend and are integrating connectivity solutions into their vehicles to meet customer expectations and improve sales. This has fueled the growth of the global connected cars market. Companies like Mercedes have witnessed increased revenue by offering connected cars. The market is influenced by factors such as new car launches, partnerships, and other disruptive incidents. According to a report by Allied Market Research, the global connected car market is projected to reach $225.16 billion by 2027, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.1% from 2020 to 2027.

Collaborations for improved user experience

Figure 1 shows Al-Futtaim's Trading Enterprises, the exclusive distributor of Volvo Cars in the UAE, has announced that the next generation of Volvo Cars will be electric vehicles, offering an enhanced and connected driving experience. Volvo Cars has partnered with IT giant Google to upgrade connectivity and infotainment systems. Volvo was the first car manufacturer to introduce cars with an infotainment system supported by Android Automotive OS, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play. The next-gen Volvo Cars will feature VolvoCars.OS, an umbrella of multiple operating systems integrated into electric Volvos and the cloud. This includes a new in-car display and collaboration with Google to optimize safety and simplicity in user experience.

Increasing connected car sales

The adoption of connected car technology has resulted in increased sales and revenue for the automobile sector globally. Mercedes-Benz India has emerged as a leader in this regard, having sold over 37,000 connected cars. The majority of Mercedes-Benz customers, approximately 80%, prefer their 'Mercedes Me Connect' technology.The 'Mercedes Me Connect' solution encompasses three components: the smartphone, the car itself, and integration with home voice assistants like Alexa and Google Home. Recognizing the demand for connected cars, Mercedes offers the 'Mercedes Me' adapter solution for older car models, ensuring that the benefits of connectivity are accessible to a wider range of customers.

Mobile IoT connectivity use

Lynk & Co has introduced a connected car solution utilizing IoT Mobile Connectivity in partnership with Orange Business Services. The vehicle leverages IoT infrastructure to provide connected car features to drivers. Lynk & Co operates on a membership-based mobility model, offering rental cars with sharing functionalities and a smartphone app for control, monitoring, and sharing. Orange has collaborated with Lynk & Co and CEVT to develop an IoT Managed Global Connectivity solution, enabling unified global connectivity for every car. Similarly, Maruti, an Indian automobile company, has launched Suzuki Connect integrated into their cars, providing features like geofencing, security alerts, vehicle status, tracking, and driving behavior analysis. This technology is gaining traction not only in India but also in developing countries in South America.[1]
