Self-service business intelligence has been on businesses’ wishlist for a long time. Business users were not comfortable with the complexity of rigid BI analytics tools. Besides, the need to bring data scientists to handle the analytics was inflating operation costs. Consequently, this induced the perpetual craving for self-service and flexibility in analysis and reporting. [1]

Self-Service BI Interfaces is shown in figure 1. Self-service BI is a solution that helps stakeholders access and analyze data and then create reports that clearly communicate findings. With this information in hand, every level of an organization can make more informed decisions. [2]

Many companies have found a great return on investment from Self Service BI. Some of the benefits offered by them include:

• Fast speed when extracting insights from data
• Reduced lag time since users can answer their questions from data
• High-quality data reporting
• Competitive advantage due to having timely insights
• High data literacy in organizations

Limitations of Self Service Business Intelligence

Although Self Service Business Intelligence is a beneficial approach to data analysis in companies, it presents a number of challenges to adapt. Some of these include:

• It requires an investment in a new platform to be used by business teams for Data Analysis
• Business Users must be trained on how to use the new platform for Data Analysis
• Business Users may face challenges when there is a need to share data between departments or pull data from external sources[3]

Although self-service business intelligence can be challenging to adopt, organizations are finding immense benefits in embracing a data-driven culture. Choosing a BI solution that fits into the existing data architecture, implementing training programs and developing a self-service BI strategy can lead to quick adoption.[4]
