The Science Behind Effective Digital Advertising
In today's crowded digital marketplace, brands often rely on emotional storytelling and bold, attention-grabbing campaigns to capture consumers' interest. However, new research suggests that the true key to influencing purchasing decisions may not be emotion alone—it may be creating advertisements that people remember.
A study published in the International Journal of Business and Systems Research found that visually appealing advertisements are more likely to drive purchase intentions than campaigns that focus primarily on emotional impact. The findings challenge the long-held belief that emotional advertising is the strongest path to consumer engagement.

Researchers analyzed survey responses from more than 400 participants using structural equation modeling, a statistical method that examines the relationships between multiple variables simultaneously. The study evaluated four major advertising characteristics: visual appeal, emotional tone, cultural relevance, and provocativeness. It also explored how these elements influenced consumer behavior through two important factors—emotional response and advertisement recall. Figure 1 shows digital advertising.
The results revealed that provocative advertisements and culturally relevant messages successfully generated emotional reactions among viewers. Surprisingly, however, these emotions did not lead to stronger intentions to purchase the advertised products. Likewise, advertisements designed primarily to evoke emotion did not significantly improve people's ability to remember the campaign or increase their likelihood of making a purchase.
Visual appeal told a different story. Advertisements with strong, attractive visuals consistently enhanced recall, making it easier for consumers to remember the brand and its message. This improved memory was closely linked to a greater willingness to buy, suggesting that lasting impressions are more influential than short-lived emotional reactions.
The study also fills an important gap in advertising research. Previous studies have often focused on credibility, information quality, and trust, while paying less attention to the roles of visual creativity, provocative messaging, and cultural relevance [1]. As digital platforms become increasingly competitive, marketers face the challenge of capturing attention in just a few seconds.
For businesses, the findings offer a valuable takeaway: eye-catching visuals should do more than attract attention—they should make the advertisement memorable. While emotional storytelling and culturally meaningful messages can enhance engagement, they are most effective when combined with compelling visual design that leaves a lasting impression.
As consumers are exposed to thousands of digital advertisements every day, the campaigns that succeed may not be the ones that generate the strongest emotions, but the ones people can still remember long after they have scrolled past.
