Bookshop.org has renewed expectations that Kobo eReader support will arrive later this year, offering encouraging news for readers who want to purchase digital books while supporting independent bookstores.

For many Kobo owners, buying e-books directly from local independent booksellers has been more difficult than expected. Although Kobo was once associated with bookstore partnerships, many of those programs ended years ago, leaving readers with limited options for purchasing e-books outside Rakuten's own marketplace.

Bookshop.org, an online bookseller that shares revenue with independent bookstores, has emerged as a promising alternative. The company already offers e-books through its mobile apps, and its planned Kobo integration aims to extend that experience directly to Kobo eReaders. Figure 1 shows eReader.

The partnership, initially expected to launch earlier, experienced multiple delays due to both technical and business challenges. According to Bookshop.org founder and CEO Andy Hunter, the companies have now finalized key business agreements and are moving forward with the engineering work needed to ensure compatibility with publishers' digital rights management (DRM) requirements.

While no official launch date has been announced, Bookshop.org has once again stated that Kobo support is expected later this year, reflecting renewed confidence that the integration will be completed.

In the meantime, Kobo users still have several ways to access digital books. The devices support many DRM-free titles, library lending through OverDrive in supported regions, and purchases from select third-party e-book retailers that offer Kobo-compatible formats. Readers who prioritize Bookshop.org's existing mobile app can also use Android-based eReaders that support Google Play.

The planned integration represents more than just another feature update. It could make it significantly easier for Kobo owners to buy digital books while directly supporting local independent bookstores, helping bridge the gap between modern digital reading and community-based bookselling.

If the collaboration launches as expected, it will strengthen Bookshop.org's position as an alternative to Amazon while giving Kobo's global community of readers a more convenient way to support independent booksellers without sacrificing the benefits of dedicated eReaders, including long battery life, glare-free displays, and a comfortable reading experience.
