Meta has introduced Muse Image, a new AI image-generation model that allows users to create images using photos from public Instagram accounts simply by tagging a username in a text prompt. The feature is the first image-generation system developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs and is now available across the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp, with support for Facebook and Messenger planned.

While Muse Image brings a range of new creative tools, its ability to incorporate public Instagram photos into AI-generated images has quickly raised privacy concerns.

Public Accounts Included by Default

Under Meta's current policy, public Instagram accounts are automatically eligible for AI image reuse. Users who do not want their public photos used in AI-generated content must manually opt out through Instagram's Sharing and Reuse settings. Meta says users can disable the feature by navigating to Profile → Menu → Sharing and Reuse and turning off reuse for both posts and reels.

According to the company, tagging a public Instagram username allows Meta AI to access that account's public images and "build a visual" that can be downloaded or shared across Meta's platforms. Instagram's updated help documentation also notes that users will not receive notifications when their public content is used to generate AI images. Figure 1 shows instagram data.

Limited Control Over Existing AI Content

Meta says the feature follows Instagram's existing reuse settings, where public accounts allow content reuse by default while private accounts are excluded.

However, the available controls have important limitations. Turning off reuse only prevents future AI-generated images from using new content and does not remove images that have already been created. Similarly, changing an account from public to private stops future reuse after a grace period but does not delete AI-generated images produced from previously public photos.

Users can also disable reuse for individual posts, while account-wide settings apply only to future uploads. For public accounts belonging to users under 18, reuse is more restricted and limited to people they follow.

Beyond Profile-Based Image Generation

In addition to Instagram profile tagging, Muse Image includes a range of AI-powered creative tools [1]. These include text-prompt image generation, image editing with sketch-based annotations, AI-generated Instagram Story effects, virtual room redesigns using products from Facebook Marketplace and the web, and preset prompts for common image transformations.

Meta also says the model can generate images containing readable text and create more advanced multi-image compositions by combining Muse Image with its Muse Spark language model, expanding the company's AI capabilities across its family of apps.
