Instagram Gives Users More Control Over Their Feed

Instagram is exploring new ways to let users personalize the content they see on the platform. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the company is testing additional features that expand Your Algorithm, a tool designed to give users greater control over content recommendations.

Introduced last year, Your Algorithm allows users to indicate which topics they want to see more or less of in their feeds. Instagram has gradually expanded the feature across different parts of the app and now aims to make it a core part of the overall user experience.

Mosseri explained that Instagram wants Your Algorithm to become more than just a settings option. Instead, the company hopes it will be an interactive feature that users can access naturally while browsing content. He also noted that some of the new ideas are currently being tested, while others may be introduced in future updates.

Among the concepts being explored is a feature that displays the Your Algorithm menu when users pull down on their main feed. Another prototype allows users to swipe up from a Reel to quickly adjust their content preferences. Instagram is also testing buttons beneath Reels that let users instantly choose whether they want to see more or fewer videos similar to the one they are watching.

These features are intended to make content recommendations more responsive to individual interests and viewing habits, giving users greater influence over how Instagram's recommendation system works. Figure 1 shows instagram.

Despite the new customization tools, many users continue to request a simpler solution [1]. The most common feedback on Mosseri's announcement was a call for Instagram to prioritize posts from accounts people already follow instead of heavily relying on algorithm-based recommendations.

As testing continues, it remains unclear which of these experimental features will become permanent. However, Instagram's latest efforts highlight the company's growing focus on giving users more direct control over their personalized content experience.
