India’s second-largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, has joined forces with IBM to offer the tech giant’s services through Airtel’s newly launched cloud platform, the companies announced on Wednesday. The collaboration comes amid rising demand for computing capacity, driven by the growing adoption of artificial intelligence and localized data storage requirements in India.

Under the partnership, Airtel Cloud customers will gain access to IBM offerings, including AI-ready servers for applications in regulated sectors such as banking, healthcare, and government. This announcement follows closely on the heels of Google’s $15 billion investment plan to establish an AI data center in Andhra Pradesh, in which Airtel is also a partner for a new facility in Visakhapatnam. Airtel’s digital arm, Xtelify, launched Airtel Cloud in August, and the collaboration with IBM will further strengthen its capabilities. Additionally, the companies plan to set up two new Multizone Regions (MZRs) in Mumbai and Chennai. These MZRs spread cloud infrastructure across multiple physical zones, ensuring that data and operations remain secure and uninterrupted in the event of a failure in any single region.

According to Gopal Vittal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Bharti Airtel, the expanded cloud infrastructure will help Indian businesses meet data residency requirements while keeping critical workloads and applications running smoothly at all times.
