SEOUL, April 3, 2024 – Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai Motor) and Kia Corporation (Kia) have unveiled the updated design of their DAL-e Delivery robot, accompanied by images and a video clip (URL). This new iteration of the delivery robot, based on the model introduced in December 2022, is anticipated to enhance delivery efficiency, particularly in intricate environments like offices and shopping complexes.[1] Figure 1 shows The DAL-e Delivery robot rolls on four Plug & Drive modules, each featuring an in-wheel motor plus intelligent steering and braking, and enhanced suspension.

  • Hyundai Motor and Kia reveal the new design and advanced technologies of DAL-e Delivery, including autonomous driving and facial recognition.
  • The design of the robot relies on Plug & Drive (PnD) modules to enhance delivery performance, particularly in intricate environments such as offices and malls.
  • DAL-e Delivery attains a maximum speed of 1.2 m/s and effortlessly maneuvers around obstacles and through narrow passages.

Building on insights gained from Hyundai Motor and Kia's previous delivery pilot project, DAL-e Delivery has undergone significant enhancements in both design and performance to provide swift and reliable delivery services in complex indoor settings.[1]

"DAL-e Delivery offers efficient and dependable food and parcel delivery services to ensure timely delivery of goods to customers," stated Dong Jin Hyun, Vice President and Head of Robotics Lab at Hyundai Motor and Kia. "Our vision includes establishing integrated infrastructure across diverse spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shopping malls.” To improve driving stability, DAL-e Delivery is constructed with a square column design featuring rounded corners and a low centre of gravity. Discreetly integrated sensors and a sophisticated metal-like design contribute to DAL-e Delivery's sleek and premium appearance.[1]

DAL-e Delivery is built upon four Plug & Drive (PnD) modules, a mobility solution combining a motor with steering, suspension, braking systems, and environmental recognition sensors. Capable of reaching speeds up to 1.2 m/s, the free-moving PnD modules, combined with advanced autonomous driving technology, enable obstacle recognition and seamless navigation in congested areas. Additionally, enhanced suspension ensures stable delivery over uneven surfaces.[1]

Although smaller in size than its predecessor, DAL-e Delivery boasts a larger internal cargo space. With the ability to accommodate up to 16 cups of coffee and transport items weighing up to 10 kg, it offers convenient delivery solutions for bulky and heavy packages.[1]

A subtle interior light facilitates easy identification of items, while the storage tray conveniently extends forward upon door opening, allowing users to load and unload items effortlessly.[1]

DAL-e Delivery's standout feature is its autonomous driving capability, seamlessly navigating to and from all building floors, interfacing with elevator and door control systems. Real-time route optimization ensures swift delivery service.[1]

Upon arrival at the destination, DAL-e Delivery employs its installed camera for recipient recognition. Utilizing advanced AI facial identification technology developed by Hyundai Motor and Kia's Robotics Lab, the door automatically opens without requiring the recipient to input a password. This facial recognition technology, officially certified by the Korea Internet and Security Agency for its 99.9 percent accuracy, underscores the technological prowess of the Robotics Lab. [1]

Featuring an 11.6-inch high-resolution display, DAL-e Delivery provides clear representation of service status, showcasing essential information such as destination and operation status. Animated facial expressions displayed on the screen enhance customer interaction.[1]

Hyundai Motor and Kia are set to deploy DAL-e Delivery at IGIS Asset Management's 'Factorial Seongsu' in the second quarter of this year. Located in Seoul, this smart office building is slated to open for occupancy in April. Hyundai Motor and Kia entered into a business agreement with IGIS in May last year to commercialize the robot-friendly building.[1]
