OpenAI plans to relax its content restrictions by December, enabling ChatGPT to generate adult erotica for users who verify their age. The decision follows more than a year of internal debate over whether NSFW content should be permitted in age-appropriate contexts.

CEO Sam Altman announced the update on X, stating that the company has now “safely relaxed the restrictions in most cases” after addressing mental health concerns linked to earlier versions of the chatbot. Altman explained that ChatGPT was initially made “pretty restrictive” to prevent potential harm. “We realize this made it less useful or enjoyable for many users without mental health issues, but given the seriousness of the concern, we wanted to get this right,” he wrote.

The announcement comes after a lawsuit in August accused OpenAI of contributing to a teenager’s suicide, intensifying scrutiny over how ChatGPT handles sensitive mental health interactions. Altman noted that OpenAI has since developed “new tools” to reduce serious risks before loosening content filters. Figure 1 shows OpenAI.

He also revealed that a new version of ChatGPT is coming in the following weeks, allowing users to customize the AI’s personality. “If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, use lots of emoji, or act like a friend, it should—but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing,” Altman added.

Erotica Access for Verified Adults

With the rollout of OpenAI’s age-verification system, adult users will gain access to erotic content. “In December, as we implement age-gating more fully and follow our principle of treating adult users like adults, we will allow even more, including erotica for verified adults,” Altman said.

The system will automatically detect the age of logged-in users, blocking mature content for teens [1]. The same rules will apply to developers, who will be able to create “mature” applications within the OpenAI ecosystem.

This change represents a major policy reversal for OpenAI, which previously prohibited sexual and explicit content. It also reflects a broader effort to make ChatGPT more flexible and “human,” addressing feedback that GPT-5 felt colder than GPT-4o.

Altman clarified that adult content will be opt-in only. Responding to a user complaint about age-gates leading to erotica, he stated: “You won’t get it unless you ask for it.”

Entering a Competitive Space

The move positions OpenAI in direct competition with Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot, which offers suggestive and anime-style interactions. Analysts predict the change will drive high user traffic and increased computing costs. Altman has previously noted that products like the Sora 2 image generator help offset GPU expenses, suggesting that mature content could serve a similar commercial purpose.
