Apple has officially unveiled its highly anticipated augmented reality system, which has been the subject of much speculation in recent months. The company has named it Apple Vision Pro, and it marks a significant milestone as Apple's inaugural foray into the realm of spatial computing. [1]

Figure 1 shows Apple Vision Pro. It introduces a unique approach to user interaction with the computing UI, positioning itself as an innovative input device comparable to a mouse or trackpad. Interestingly, the design of the headset closely resembles previously leaked renders, resembling a pair of ski goggles. It's evident that the intended usage of this device is primarily within the confines of a home or office setting, rather than being suitable for outdoor wear. [2]

At the core of the Apple Vision Pro wearable system are two remarkably small ultra-high-resolution displays, each comparable in size to a postage stamp. Together, they boast an impressive total of 23 million pixels, delivering an immersive visual experience. These cutting-edge displays enable users to perceive three-dimensional 4K graphics seamlessly integrated with their real-world view. [1]

Unsurprisingly, the technology integrated into the Apple Vision Pro system offers users the opportunity to engage in highly immersive gaming experiences. Additionally, it enables the viewing of movies, TV shows, and various video content on a virtual screen that creates the illusion of a remarkable 100-foot width (30.5 m). To enhance the overall experience, the headset incorporates an integrated 180-degree Spatial Audio system, further enriching the audiovisual journey for users. [1]

A noteworthy feature of the Apple Vision Pro hardware is the introduction of "EyeSight." This innovative functionality employs a front-facing display to make your eyes visible to others in the room. By capturing an initial facial scan, the system generates an authentic representation of your eyes on the curved front glass, serving as a realistic portrayal of yourself. Furthermore, this image doubles as your avatar, representing you to other individuals utilizing the headset. [2]

In addition to its advanced features, the Apple Vision Pro headset incorporates Apple's first-ever three-dimensional camera, seamlessly integrated into the device. This camera enables users to capture their own videos and still images. What sets it apart is the capability to relive those recorded moments in a unique way. By leveraging the system's immersive capabilities, users can revisit the recorded environment and experience a sense of being transported back into that specific moment. [1]

It allows multitasking users to create multiple virtual screens that appear to float in front of them. These screens can simultaneously display various apps, documents, or other content, allowing users to effortlessly switch their gaze between them. The real-world surroundings remain visible in the areas where the virtual screens are not present. [1]

Furthermore, users can conveniently control the displayed content through voice commands, hand gestures, and even eye movements, offering a range of intuitive and efficient interaction methods. [1]

Apple has introduced VisionOS, a brand-new operating system explicitly designed for spatial computing. Reminiscent of the initial launch of the iPad, the Apple Vision Pro system incorporates a range of educational features, including apps for astronomy, health, and music creation. [2]

Apple has emphasized that VisionOS is compatible with Microsoft Office apps and popular teleconferencing services like WebEX and Zoom. The operating system is built on the same framework as iOS and iPadOS, ensuring seamless porting of existing apps. Additionally, Apple is launching a dedicated App Store specifically for the Vision Pro headset, further enhancing the user experience. Collaboration with Unity provides robust game development tools, offering an enhanced gaming experience beyond simple game porting. [2]

To enhance security, the Apple Vision Pro system features an upgraded version of FaceID called OpticID, which adds security features for functions like Apple Pay. Furthermore, the processing of camera data occurs onboard the device, and Apple does not log or track the user's gaze or eye movements, ensuring privacy and data protection. [2]

With a planned release early next year and a hefty price tag of $3,499, the Apple Vision Pro AR headset is clearly positioned as a product aimed at enterprise buyers rather than the average consumer. Its innovative features, including ultra-high-resolution displays, immersive spatial audio, and advanced interaction methods, make it a promising tool for businesses and professionals in various fields.
