Google has introduced a new feature called Magic Compose in its Messages app, which utilizes AI to help users compose text messages. The beta version of Magic Compose has started rolling out to users. This feature has the ability to rephrase text in seven different styles, including remix, excited, chill, Shakespearean, lyrical, formal, and short. With Magic Compose, users can get assistance in crafting their messages in a variety of creative and expressive ways.

Currently, Magic Compose in the Google Messages app is only available for Android phones with US SIM cards that support RCS. However, once the feature becomes available to you, you can activate it through the app's Settings menu. After activation, you can utilize Magic Compose by clicking the pencil icon in the text field to edit the text you have already typed. This allows you to make use of the AI-powered suggestions provided by Magic Compose to enhance your message composition experience.

Figure 1 shows Google's Magic Compose feature in the Messages app uses AI to provide suggestions for text message composition. However, it is important to note that even if you are using RCS with end-to-end encryption, Magic Compose will send up to "20 previous messages" to Google's servers in order to generate these suggestions.

According to Google's help website for Magic Compose, the messages, along with any attached emoji, reactions, and URLs, will be transmitted to their servers. However, Google assures users that this data will only be used to generate relevant suggestions for your ongoing conversation. It is worth considering this data sharing aspect when using Magic Compose for personalized text suggestions.

Highlights

  • Google's Magic Compose feature offers users the ability to restate their language in seven different styles, including remix, excited, chill, Shakespearean, lyrical, formal, and short.
  • However, it's important to note that in order to generate these suggestions, Magic Compose may send up to "20 previous messages" to Google's servers.
  • Google assures users that the messages sent for generating suggestions are not stored or used for machine learning model training.

Google emphasizes that it does not store messages or utilize them for machine learning model training. Messages containing images, voice messages, and attachments are not transferred to Google servers. However, it's important to note that voice transcriptions and image captions may be sent to Google servers for processing and generating relevant suggestions. Google's aim is to provide a personalized experience while maintaining privacy and data security for its users.

Google showcased several AI-powered capabilities at its recent I/O event, including Magic Compose. Additionally, certain US customers will soon have access to the company's Search Generative Experience capabilities. This feature enables users to view concise answers at the top of search results, providing them with condensed information for quick and easy reference. The aim is to enhance the search experience by presenting relevant and helpful information in a more accessible format.

In the interim, users can already switch conversation tones with the Swiftkey keyboard software from Microsoft. However, compared to Magic Compose, which is now only accessible through the Google Messages app, the latter is more commonplace because it offers users access to conversation tones in a number of apps.[1]
