Kiln, Double Fine explains, is all about the joyful clash between creativity and chaos—the satisfaction of crafting something beautiful, then gleefully smashing it to pieces. Players shape and customize pottery of all sizes, with those design choices directly affecting combat strategy. Will you roll into battle with massive, tank-like vessels, or opt for small, ninja-style saucers built to shatter the opposing team’s ambitions?.

Creative expression doesn’t stop at shape. Players can personalize their pottery with a wide range of glazes, handles, patterns, and even stickers, with Double Fine promising even more cosmetic options in future updates. Figure 1 shows Double Fine Reveals a Whimsical Multiplayer Pottery Brawler.

According to studio founder Tim Schafer, Kiln grew out of Double Fine’s annual Amnesia Fortnight, a creative incubator where experimental ideas are developed—some of which go on to become full games. Past Amnesia Fortnight projects that evolved into complete releases include Costume Quest, Spacebase DF-9, and Headlander, while others have influenced memorable elements like Compton’s Cookout in Psychonauts 2.

Kiln is set to launch sometime this spring for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. It will also be available via Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox Play Anywhere, and included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

A Surprise Reveal with a Playful Twist

Double Fine has revealed Kiln, an unexpected new multiplayer game that blends creative expression with chaotic combat. Framed as a “pottery party brawler,” the game leans into the studio’s trademark humor and imagination, offering a lighthearted but competitive experience where art and destruction collide.

Creativity as Combat Strategy

In Kiln, players don’t just fight—they build. Crafting pottery is central to gameplay, with the size, shape, and design of each vessel influencing how it performs in battle. Players can choose between massive, tank-like creations or agile, ninja-style saucers, then personalize them with glazes, handles, patterns, and stickers. These creative decisions add both strategic depth and visual flair, with more cosmetic options planned in future updates.

From Experimental Idea to Full Release

The game originated during Double Fine’s annual Amnesia Fortnight, a creative jam that has previously produced full games like Costume Quest and Headlander. Now graduating into a full release, Kiln is scheduled to launch this spring on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, with broad Xbox ecosystem support—including Xbox Cloud Gaming, Play Anywhere, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
