Apple iPhone 18 Pro Lineup and iPhone 17e Tipped to Launch with Apple-Designed Cellular Modems
Leaked internal references hint that Apple could debut its own cellular modem with the upcoming iPhone 17e, marking a gradual move away from third-party suppliers. The same leak suggests the iPhone 17e may offer fewer wireless capabilities than Pro models, as it is not expected to include Apple’s N1 wireless chip. Meanwhile, for future Pro devices such as the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple is reportedly still evaluating multiple modem options, indicating that final hardware choices have yet to be confirmed.
Overall, Apple appears to be edging closer to deeper reliance on in-house hardware. Newly uncovered internal software references provide an early look at how this transition might unfold in upcoming iPhones. Code tied to Apple’s internal testing points to the iPhone 17e launching with a homegrown cellular modem, representing another step away from external partners. At the same time, reports suggest some uncertainty around the exact hardware configurations planned for future Pro models. While Apple has not officially shared any details, these early indicators suggest a transitional phase as the company refines its long-term wireless connectivity strategy across its iPhone lineup.

Apple’s move toward in-house modem technology
The rumours stem from internal macOS system files that were briefly accessible before Apple removed them. These files reportedly referenced future iPhone models and the components being tested internally. According to the leaked code, the iPhone 17e is associated with Apple’s C1-series cellular modem, potentially making it one of the first iPhones to rely entirely on an Apple-designed solution for mobile connectivity. iPhone 17e: Modem and hardware details
Notably, the same references indicate that the iPhone 17e will not feature Apple’s N1 wireless chip [1]. Since the N1 chip supports certain short-range networking functions that Apple has been expanding across its devices, its absence could mean the iPhone 17e may miss out on some connectivity features available on higher-end models.
The code also suggests the device could support either the C1 modem or the upgraded C1X variant. However, a separate report claims Apple is leaning toward the C1X, which is expected to deliver better performance than the modem used in the iPhone 16e. If true, this would signal Apple’s intention to continuously refine its in-house modem technology, even for more affordable devices.
iPhone 18 Pro: Modem and connectivity features
For the next-generation Pro models, the situation appears less certain. Internal information reportedly shows Apple testing two modem options—C1X and C2—for the iPhone 18 Pro. This suggests the company has not yet finalised its choice, which is typical at an early development stage. Unlike the iPhone 17e, the Pro models are still expected to retain the N1 wireless chip, ensuring full connectivity features remain intact.
