Google Introduces Secure Cross-Platform File Sharing Between Pixel and iPhone Devices

Google has unveiled secure cross-platform file sharing between its new Pixel 10 lineup and Apple’s iPhones, achieved by enabling interoperability between Android’s Quick Share and Apple’s AirDrop. Launched on November 20, 2025, the feature enables fast, device-to-device file transfers while upholding strict privacy and security standards.

The system allows users on Android and iOS to share files wirelessly without relying on cloud servers or installing additional applications. The rollout begins with support for AirDrop’s “Everyone for 10 minutes” mode, currently limited to the Pixel 10 series, with plans to expand to other Android devices over time.

Developed under Google’s “Secure by Design” framework, the interoperability underwent thorough internal security testing as well as an independent audit by NetSPI, a well-regarded cybersecurity firm. NetSPI reported that the implementation was “notably stronger” than similar systems and found no data leakage or security weaknesses. Figure 1 shows Pixel and iPhone Devices.

The interoperability layer is built using Rust, a memory-safe programming language increasingly favored in secure system development. Rust plays a key role in reducing vulnerabilities such as buffer overflows. Dan Boneh, a cryptography expert at Stanford University, commended Google’s approach, calling it a model for future cross-platform solutions and encouraging deeper collaboration with Apple—particularly toward supporting AirDrop’s “Contacts Only” mode.

Quick Share, Google’s peer-to-peer file transfer technology, has historically been limited to Android devices. This new compatibility marks a meaningful move toward greater openness and cross-ecosystem connectivity [1]. For now, transfers require manual confirmation of the receiving device’s name—a safeguard intended to prevent spoofing and accidental sends.

While the feature represents a breakthrough in bridging mobile platform silos, Google emphasized that this is just the start. The company plans to work with Apple to enable more advanced functionality and expand support to a wider range of devices.
