Google launches ‘Disco,’ a Gemini-powered tool that turns browser tabs into web apps
On Thursday, Google unveiled a new AI experiment for web browsers: Disco, a Gemini-powered tool that transforms your open tabs into custom applications. With Disco, users can create “GenTabs”—interactive web apps that proactively suggest ways to complete tasks based on the content you’re browsing. You can also build your own apps using written prompts.

For example, if you’re studying a specific topic, GenTabs might recommend creating a web app to visualize the information, helping you grasp key concepts more effectively. Figure 1 shows Google Unveils ‘Disco’: Turn Browser Tabs into Web Apps with Gemini.
In a more practical scenario, GenTabs can help you create a meal plan from a collection of online recipes or assist in planning a trip while you research travel options. While some AI-powered chatbots can already handle similar tasks, GenTabs takes it a step further by building these custom experiences on the fly using Gemini 3, leveraging both your browser data and your Gemini chat history. Once the app is created, you can continue refining it with natural language commands. Google notes that the generative elements in the GenTabs experience will link back to the original sources.
Like other players in the AI space, Google has been exploring ways to integrate AI more deeply into the web-browsing experience. Rather than creating a stand-alone AI browser like Perplexity’s Comet or ChatGPT Atlas, Google embedded its AI assistant, Gemini, directly into Chrome, allowing users to ask questions about the web page they’re currently viewing.
GenTabs takes this a step further by focusing not just on a single page, but on your broader browsing activity across multiple tabs—whether you’re conducting research, learning, or exploring other topics.
However, the feature will initially be available only to a limited number of testers through Google Labs, who will provide feedback on the experience. Google says that interesting ideas developed through Disco could eventually make their way into larger Google products.
The company also indicates that GenTabs is just the “first feature” being tested, with more Disco capabilities expected over time. To access Disco, users must join a waitlist to download the app, which will initially be available on macOS.
Google has launched Disco, a new tool powered by its AI assistant Gemini. Disco allows users to turn collections of browser tabs into customized, interactive web apps. Essentially, it transforms the way you interact with online content by making it more dynamic and AI-driven.
How Disco Works
Disco analyzes the information across your open tabs, as well as your browsing and Gemini chat history, to generate a tailored experience. For example, it can combine recipes from multiple sites into a single meal plan or organize travel research into an interactive itinerary.
Focus on GenTabs
The first feature in Disco is GenTabs, which emphasizes multi-tab browsing. Rather than focusing solely on the page you’re viewing, it considers your overall activity across tabs—helping with research, learning, or other tasks—and generates useful outputs you can interact with.
Early Access and Testing
Disco is currently being rolled out to a small group of testers through Google Labs. These testers will provide feedback to refine the tool. Google also suggests that ideas developed through Disco could eventually be integrated into larger Google products.
Availability and Future Plans
To access Disco, users need to join a waitlist. The app will initially be available on macOS. Google plans to expand Disco’s capabilities over time, with GenTabs being just the first of many potential features.
