ChatGPT’s User Growth Shows Signs of Slowing, Report Reveals

According to new data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, ChatGPT’s growth is beginning to level off. The OpenAI chatbot still leads the market, making up 50% of global mobile downloads and 55% of global monthly active users. However, Google’s Gemini is now outpacing ChatGPT in download growth, monthly active user growth, and time spent in the app.

If Gemini maintains this faster rate of adoption, it could gradually close the gap with ChatGPT — a possibility that OpenAI appears to be taking seriously. In a recent “code red” memo, CEO Sam Altman urged employees to double down on upgrading the company’s AI products, including personalization, reliability, and image generation. Still, both platforms continue to expand significantly. As of November 2025, ChatGPT’s global monthly active users are up 180% year-over-year, while Gemini’s have increased 170%.

Sensor Tower’s latest data shows that ChatGPT’s global monthly active users grew only about 6% between August and November, reaching roughly 810 million. Because of this slowdown, the firm suggests the chatbot may be approaching market saturation.

During the same period, Google’s Gemini saw its global monthly active users surge by about 30%, boosted in part by the launch of its new image generation model, Nano Banana, which spurred additional adoption.

The report also highlights that twice as many U.S. Android users now interact with Gemini via the Android operating system itself compared to the standalone Gemini app. This integration could give Google a competitive edge in the global market — especially where Android is dominant — by allowing Gemini to be used beyond just a mobile app or web interface.

Gemini is also expanding its share of the overall AI chatbot market when compared with leading competitors like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok. Sensor Tower estimates that between May and November 2025, Gemini grew its share of global monthly active users by three percentage points.

In contrast, ChatGPT’s share of global monthly active users fell by three percentage points from August to November 2025.

Competition from Perplexity and Claude may also be contributing to ChatGPT’s slowdown. Both rivals posted triple-digit growth in 2025: Perplexity soared 370% year-over-year, while Claude grew 190%.

ChatGPT’s global downloads rose 85% year-over-year as of November, but this growth trailed the overall category average of 110%.

Sensor Tower also found that time spent in the Gemini app has more than doubled in recent months. By November, users were spending an average of 11 minutes per day in the app — a 120% increase since March — driven largely by the surge in popularity of its Nano Banana image generation model in September.

In comparison, ChatGPT’s daily time spent rose by only 6% over the same period, and even declined 10% from July to November.

Although the data suggests Google may be gaining ground on the market leader, much of Gemini’s recent momentum stems from Nano Banana’s success. OpenAI could potentially re-accelerate its growth with the launch of impactful new products of its own.
