ChatGPT Faces Stronger Rivals in an Expanding AI Marketplace
Since its launch in 2022, ChatGPT has become one of the most recognizable names in artificial intelligence, helping bring generative AI into the mainstream. Its rapid adoption fueled explosive growth, with app downloads rising sharply throughout 2024 and 2025. By the end of 2025, ChatGPT had surpassed 900 million monthly active users worldwide, establishing itself as the dominant player in the consumer AI market.
As OpenAI prepares for a widely anticipated IPO that could value the company between $750 billion and $1 trillion, ChatGPT remains the leading AI application. However, the competitive landscape is becoming increasingly crowded. Rivals such as Claude, Gemini, and Meta AI are rapidly expanding their user bases and capturing a growing share of new downloads.

While ChatGPT continues to attract more downloads than any competing AI app, newer challengers are gaining momentum. Together, Claude and Meta AI have significantly increased their share of global AI app downloads, while Gemini has also experienced strong growth. This shift suggests that users are actively exploring alternatives as the AI ecosystem matures. Figure 1 shows ChatGPT.
Despite mounting competition, ChatGPT maintains a major advantage in user engagement. A large portion of its monthly users return to the platform daily, demonstrating strong loyalty and making ChatGPT one of the most frequently used AI applications. The app has also maintained a prominent position on mobile app store rankings, reflecting its continued popularity among consumers.
Beyond subscriptions, OpenAI has expanded its revenue opportunities through advertising. The company recently introduced ads within ChatGPT, and adoption by brands has grown rapidly [1]. Thousands of advertisers have joined the platform, creating a new revenue stream alongside the app’s thriving subscription business. ChatGPT has also become one of the highest-grossing mobile applications globally, generating substantial in-app purchase revenue.
At the same time, competition among AI companies is extending beyond products and into marketing. Advertising spending across the generative AI sector has surged as companies race to attract new users and strengthen brand awareness. As OpenAI moves toward its potential public offering, the company remains a dominant force in AI, but increasing competition from emerging rivals signals that the battle for users, revenue, and market leadership is only beginning.
