Salad and bowl chain Sweetgreen Inc. has sold its Spyce robotics business to Wonder Group Inc. for $186.4 million. Both companies said they plan to expand the deployment of Spyce’s Infinite Kitchen system to additional locations.

Founded in 2015 by MIT graduates, Spyce developed an automated hopper-based system for assembling food bowls and operated two Boston-area restaurants. Sweetgreen acquired the Somerville, Massachusetts-based startup for approximately $70 million in 2021, later closing the locations to focus on integrating Spyce’s technology into its own restaurants. Sweetgreen has since redesigned and commercialized the Infinite Kitchen, which now operates in more than 20 of its U.S. locations, improving throughput, food quality, accuracy, and consistency. Despite these advancements, Sweetgreen has faced financial challenges amid changing economic conditions and consumer demand.

Jonathan Neman, co-founder and CEO of Sweetgreen, said, “We’re incredibly proud of the work our team and the Spyce team have done to develop, scale, and monetize one of the world’s most advanced robotic food technologies.” He added that collaboration with Wonder will allow Sweetgreen to continue enhancing the guest experience while unlocking future innovation and growth opportunities.

Under the deal, Sweetgreen will receive $100 million in cash and Series C preferred stock of Wonder valued at $86.4 million based on Wonder’s most recent equity pricing. Sweetgreen plans to use the proceeds to reinvest in strategic priorities and strengthen growth and profitability.

As part of the sale, Sweetgreen signed a supply and licensing agreement to continue using Infinite Kitchens across its restaurants. Additionally, 38 Spyce engineers and staff—including co-founders Michael Farid, Kale Rogers, Brady Knight, and Luke Schlueter—will transition to Wonder.

Wonder Aims to Grow Using Spyce’s Infinite Kitchen

New York-based Wonder said the acquisition of Spyce’s Infinite Kitchen will accelerate its transformation from a vertically-integrated restaurant operator into a tech-driven food platform that owns both robotics and infrastructure.

“At Wonder, everything begins and ends with the customer,” said Marc Lore, founder and CEO. “This acquisition equips us with advanced robotics capabilities, allowing us to evolve from a multi-restaurant operator into a scalable, technology-powered food platform that can redefine how food is prepared and served.”

Lore added, “With this technology, we can eventually operate over 100 restaurants across any cuisine or price point, all from compact kitchens, delivering food faster, hotter, and with precise consistency. It supports our mission to make great food more accessible—bringing more restaurants to more people, in more locations, at more times of day, and at more affordable prices.”
