Gigabit and 10 Gb Ethernet

10 gigabit Ethernet — otherwise known as 10 GbE, 10GE or 10G Ethernet — is an Ethernet technology that transmits at 10 gigabits per second. When 10gb Ethernet came onto the scene, it enhanced traditional gigabit Ethernet’s capabilities 10 times over. This internet standard gradually became hugely popular among high-speed storage networks as well as companies and metropolitan networks, and it remains in wide use today.

Beyond its 10 gigabit ethernet actual speed, 10gb differs from prior Ethernet standards in a few ways — namely, it uses point-to-point connections that are linked by network switches.[1]

Gigabit and 10 Gb Ethernet is shown in figure 1. 10 Gigabit Ethernet, also known as 10GbE and 10G Ethernet, is a telecommunication technology that offers data speeds up to 10 billion bits per second, which is 10 times faster than the traditional Gigabit Ethernet standard.

10G Ethernet is needed to connect routers, 10G switches, and servers in data centers and enterprises, and for long-distance and high-bandwidth trunks to enable area networks based on Ethernet and fiber. It supports connectivity in a wide range of network applications, such as local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), and metropolitan area networks (MAN).[2]

Advantages of 10G Ethernet:

  1. Provides reliable superfast speed
  2. Prevent data bottlenecks
  3. Provides reliable security
  4. Expands server capabilities
  5. Provides greater scalability

Disadvantages of 10G Ethernet:

  1. Not for personal use
  2. Setup may be difficult
  3. Requires higher power input
  4. Cost may be a little high
  5. No Mobility [3]

More and more network users now want to be able to connect with any device, anywhere and anytime with high-quality, super-fast connections and no downtime. 10G Ethernet technology provides the possibility. If you’re thinking about upgrading your network, it’s a good idea to consider FS 10G Ethernet solutions and products. [2]
