Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computer systems, networks, and sensitive information from theft, damage, or unauthorized access. With the increasing reliance on technology in all aspects of our lives, cybersecurity has become a critical issue for individuals, businesses, and governments.

Cybersecurity has always been a never-ending race, but the rate of change is accelerating. Companies are continuing to invest in technology to run their businesses. Now, they are layering more systems into their IT networks to support remote work, enhance the customer experience, and generate value, all of which creates potential new vulnerabilities.[1]

Figure 1 shows Cyber security is a fast-moving sector, as both hackers and security providers vie to outsmart each other. New threats and innovative ways to combat them emerge all the time. In this overview, we explore the latest trends in cyber security.[2]

Here are some trending topics in cybersecurity:
  1. Ransomware:Ransomware is a type of malicious software that encrypts a victim's data and demands payment in exchange for the decryption key. Ransomware attacks have become increasingly common in recent years, and can be devastating for individuals and organizations.
  2. Zero-day vulnerabilities:Zero-day vulnerabilities are previously unknown security flaws that are exploited by hackers before they can be patched by software vendors. These vulnerabilities can be difficult to detect and can result in significant security breaches.
  3. Internet of Things (IoT) security:As more devices become connected to the internet, ensuring the security of these devices has become increasingly important. IoT devices can be vulnerable to attack and can be used as a foothold for attackers to gain access to larger systems.
  4. Cloud security:Cloud computing has become increasingly popular, but it also introduces new security risks. Ensuring the security of data stored in the cloud and protecting against unauthorized access is a critical challenge for organizations.
  5. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in cybersecurity: AI and ML can be used to enhance cybersecurity by detecting and responding to threats in real-time. However, these technologies can also be used by attackers to automate and scale their attacks. Ensuring the security of AI and ML systems is a critical challenge in cybersecurity.
