Surfshark has announced the deployment of 100 Gbps servers in Amsterdam, a major leap from the VPN industry’s typical 10 Gbps standard.

The company claims to be the first VPN provider to offer 100 Gbps servers, part of a broader initiative to expand infrastructure in response to growing demand for high-speed, low-latency internet access. Currently in the testing phase, these servers may see wider rollout depending on performance results.

Based in the Netherlands, Surfshark is a prominent VPN provider known for privacy, affordability, and cross-platform support, serving users in over 100 countries. The introduction of 100 Gbps servers signals a strategic investment in high-throughput infrastructure, aimed at supporting bandwidth-intensive activities such as 8K streaming, virtual reality, cloud gaming, and more. Figure 1 shows Surfshark.

Technically, 100 Gbps connections offer ten times the throughput of standard 10 Gbps VPN servers. This can result in more stable speeds during peak times, improved handling of multiple high-bandwidth connections, and faster data transfers [1]. Surfshark highlights benefits including lag-free video conferencing, quicker OS updates, seamless cloud file syncing, and low-latency online gaming.

While the announcement does not specify what portion of users will access these servers during testing, the choice of Amsterdam—a key European internet exchange—suggests a focus on optimizing speeds for Western Europe. No timeline has been provided for global deployment.

Users should note that actual performance gains will depend on ISP bandwidth, device capabilities, and VPN protocol choice. Nevertheless, Surfshark’s move is likely to push other VPN providers to accelerate infrastructure upgrades, potentially setting a new industry speed benchmark in the coming years.
