The movie Ready Player One envisioned a fully immersive virtual world where human connection transcends borders. Today, VR has stepped out of science fiction and into everyday life. For New Scientist, reporter Linda Rodriguez-McRobbie visited a virtual nightclub, entering a subculture where social identity is limited only by imagination.

Guided by club organiser and VR researcher Karl Clarke, she explored the technology behind these experiences and how VR is driving innovation across film, military training, rehabilitation, and healthcare. The visit also revealed its growing role in AI training and understanding social interaction. In a pioneering VR experiment, every aspect of participants’ social presence was manipulated, producing striking and unexpected outcomes.
