HiPerGator 4.0: University of Florida Unveils the Nation’s Fastest Academic Supercomputer
The University of Florida has launched HiPerGator 4.0, the nation’s fastest university-owned supercomputer — a powerhouse 30 times faster than its previous version. Unveiled at UF’s East Campus, the next-generation HiPerGator marks a defining step in the university’s ambitious AI journey. The launch event brought together state officials, corporate partners, and university leaders, celebrating UF’s growing influence in academic computing.
Replacing the 2020 NVIDIA DGX A100 “Ampere” SuperPOD, the new DGX B200 “Blackwell” SuperPOD features 504 GPUs across 63 nodes, delivering a major leap in speed and energy efficiency. The $33 million system firmly establishes UF as a national leader in AI research and education.

At the ceremony, Elias G. Eldayrie, UF’s senior vice president and CIO, welcomed over 125 attendees, including representatives from NVIDIA, the UF Board of Trustees, and U.S. Representative Kat Cammack. Student organizations — from the Swamp Launch Rocket Team to Gator Motor Sports and iGEM synthetic biology competitors — showcased real-world projects powered by AI.
“As Florida’s flagship university, UF has embraced a bold vision to be the nation’s AI university,” said Mori Hosseini, Chair of the UF Board of Trustees. “Our commitment to AI is about fueling economic growth and preparing America’s next generation of leaders.” HiPerGator’s upgraded DGX B200 SuperPOD forms the backbone of UF’s expanding AI ecosystem [1]. Each of its 63 nodes houses eight NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs — making UF’s long-standing collaboration with NVIDIA a cornerstone of its AI success.
“Every part of this university is a playground for AI,” noted UF Interim President Donald W. Landry. “This moment reflects vision, partnership, and dedication.” The HiPerGator recently achieved No. 3 in the world for performance and No. 4 for energy efficiency, according to the MLCommons benchmark, joining the global elite of supercomputing institutions. With over 100 AI-focused faculty, 230 data science courses, and 60% of UF’s $1.33 billion annual research budget relying on HiPerGator’s infrastructure, UF has deeply embedded AI into every field — from medicine and engineering to humanities and astronomy. The system supports nearly 7,000 users across the Southeast and powers NaviGator AI, a platform offering access to 40+ large language models for generative AI research.
“This machine is meant to be pushed to its limits,” said Chris Malachowsky, NVIDIA cofounder and UF alumnus. “Take it and run — it’s bold, powerful, and transformative.”Launched in 2020, UF’s AI initiative has become a national model for integrating academic innovation with real-world application, demonstrating how public universities can drive technological advancement and prepare an AI-ready workforce for the future. HiPerGator’s global performance rankings were recently confirmed by MLCommons, the leading benchmark authority for AI computing systems.
